any one here know what transmission , in 1964, was matched to the 409 425 HP engine on a Pontiac Parisienne? i found a date correct completely reburbished 409 425 HP engine and i would like to know if my automatic powerglide transmission could work
ahhhh,, the glide will handle gobs of power, a freshening up with some upgraded parts , and it will easily handle the 409. My friend runs a 585 HP BBC in his race car with a glide.
an overdrive would be nice,, but it's not like this is your commuter car??
I'd lay dollars on the stock glide in your 64 will hold up. Unless you go to the other end and start correcting and adding traction control and upgrades...lets be honest here,, the only way things break is when they become the weak link..... the only thing I'd ad would be a good tranny cooler.

100% agreed, the p glide is prolly the best tranny gm ever made. they can handle whatever you can throw at em. they are the most sought after race tranny ever. i,ll be around 450- 475hp with my 427, and it,ll be bolted to my powerglide.

tks for the help yes , the engine builder told me he could give me (sell) a totally rebuilt powerglide with the engine and it would be perfect for it i just wanted to double check
the 09 glide is the same as the 300 hp 327 as far as internals go ie more cutch paks and hevier springs they survive quite well compared to 350s or 700s
im sure the 'glide would rock behind your big block, dual quad 409. but, the beach boys had it accurate, sorry. 4 speed, dual quad, positraction? 409 the shop manual echoes the song. doesnt specify a brand of 4 speed, but im betting a muncie.
My neighbour has a 63 Pontiac 283 w/Pwr. glide, 2bbl [195 hp.??] engine sitting outside his garage, was for his sons 63 Impala, but will likely never get put in [6cyl. 250 now] Needs a rebuild, if anyone interested I'll ask him if they "want to part' with it.??????

In 1964 whether it was a Pontiac or a Chevrolet, if they were equipped with the 409 425- means 11.1's, big port heads, solid camshaft, dual quads, dual point distrib, dripper valve covers, and cast "header" style exhaust manifolds. They were ONLY available with a 4 speed Muncie period. The 409 340 horse was available with a Powerglide auto or a 4 speed. No 3 speed standards with 409s in 64 as far as I am aware. At the end of 1963 Chevrolet fullsize cars switched to the Muncie from the early Borg Warner T10. Muncie is the only correct 4 speed for the 64 cars. It could be an M20-wide ratio or an M21-close ratio. No M22 till later on 66 and up I believe??? Giddyup!

My understanding is the same - Muncie only with 425 HP.
the PG would be ok
