I read this on another forum. It was the last post in a thread about Canadian Chevelles. I have never heard of this before, and no proof was offered. I don't think the author meant just in Canadian cars but a big block 69 Chevelle police car?
"There was also a difference between the the 1970 Canadian and U.S. Chevelles. In the U.S. Chevrolet dropped the 300 Deluxe base Chevelle name. The base Chevelles were still built in the U.S. but they were simply called a "Chevelle". As a result there were still two series....the Chevelle series and the Malibu series. In Canada the 300 Deluxe name was retained. oldcarbrochures.com has a photo copy of a 1970 Canadian Chevelle brochure but their website is down at the present time. In Canada and the U.S. both the 1970 3400 series base Chevelle and the non-SS 3600 series Malibu were, for the first time (except for the '69 4-dr. police package Chevelle), available with a big block engine. The LS3 400 (402). "

I once saw a 1969 Chevelle Police car sales brochure. As I recall it did list the 396 as optional for police use only. It wasn't a high HP version because the 350 almost equaled it. I think it was a 396 2bbl as I recall. I sure wish I could remember who showed me that brochure. It is two tone, black and white and a yellow or orange sort of colour with a photo of a 4dr. Chevelle in New York City as I recall.
It would have to be a real low production car because let's face it how many 1969 Chevelle police cars were there in the first place.
From 1970 to 1972 the 402 big block.was available in non SS Chevelles marketed as the 400. Many folks don't know this and even those who do often think it was a 400 small block. Many people call these cars Malibu 400 but that was not a model just the fender flash placement on 71 & 72 I believe.

Ron, is this post car white? Do you know the owner?
THERE WAS A 396 4DR CHEVELLE POLICE CAR ON E-BAY ABOUT 8 YEARS AGO. IT HAD BEEN DISCUSSED, I BELIEVE, ON CHEVY TALK AT THAT TIME. FIRST AND ONLY ONE I'VE EVER HEARD OF.
'69 Chevelle Police Pkg. had the L35 MK1V available.. RPO B07 Police Pkg. equipment may have been mandatory to get it?. Canadian production?.
68SD's Copo note above is on the money!. '69 Copo Chevelles were non SS cars ordered w/ L78 equipment but unique rear axles and engines substituted w/ L72's.. If original to the cars, rear axle codes are key!.
The L78 SS Post car mentioned above sounds great!. Love to see/hear more on this one!!!

Presented for your auction viewing is one extremely rare factory big-block '70 convertible Chevelle. There were only an estimated 28 of these "NON-SS" big-block LS3 Chevelle Convertibles produced in 1970. GM labelled them as "Malibu 400"s as they were the top of the line trim level for the Chevelle known as the Malibu and sported 400 badges on the front fenders designating the 402c.i. engine. If you have never seen one of these convertibles, I am not supprised as this is believed to be the only remaining documented survivor of the 28 produced which makes it the only fully documented "NON-SS" convertible big block Chevelle known to exist out of all the Chevelle convertibles produced from 1964 though the end of 1970! And that makes this a very significant Chevelle for a true collector! And YES, this LS3 convertible is FULLY DOCUMENTED and has the original NUMBER MATCHING engine. The way you see it here is exactly as it left the factory including the D-88 HOOD & DECK STRIPES, rally rims, air conditionong, 8 track-stereo with (4) speaker system, power steering, power disc brakes, power top, automatic trans, hide away wipers, window antenna, Cranberry red body, pearl white interior (original and now 40 years old), etc all as verified by the complete and ORIGINAL BUILD SHEET. This particular Chevelle is currently featured on the December issue cover of Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine as the main feature vehicle titled "The UNKNOWN Big-Block Chevelle". Inside there is a six page full-feature article complete with the LS3 story and the particular story on this LS3 along with editor driving impression and a spec sheet. This is a great car that I have owned for five years and has no rust issues or mechanical defects known. I do not consider this Chevelle a restored car but a low milage well maintained Chevelle that is to be driven any where with confidence that is nice enough to show and be a second or third place winner, but not a trailor type queen to win the show. Vehicle has a clear title in my name and is currently registered and insured for the street. I do reserve the right to end this auction early if this Chevelle is sold prior to this eBay auction ending as it is advertised else where for sale as well. This Chevelle may be inspected by you personally or a third party any time during the auction simply by calling and making arrangements to do so. A deposite of $500.00 dollars is due within 5 days of winning this auction or using the buy-it-now option. Balance in full to be due within 14 days of auction close or use of the buy-it-now option. Purchaser is responsible for vehicle pick up and transportation plus all applicable fees and taxes incurred regarding sale and transfer. If you have any questions, feel free to call me at (951)780-7109 and ask for Kurt.
