Have any of you have a family member with mental health issues?? My step son has gone off his "meds" again a week ago!! Hearing voices & thinks the Mafia is after him. Can't talk to him "rationally" because he hears a "whole different" conversation than what you are saying!!He made a promise to us to stay on the "Meds" as a condition of staying here w/us, as a result i had to put him out, as he can become "very violent". The Canadian Mental Health Laws are a JOKE. & the hospital releases him after 72 hrs. or less with no guarentee that he will be on his Meds!! & state "as long as he can feed himself & keep himself clean" he's out"" We tried to get him to talk to Crisis Centre but he heard totally different conversation than what was being said & hung up on them!! Man this is tearing Janice & up, & he is coming back for Christmas dinner here when the whole family will be here. It's like sitting on a "BOMB" waiting for it to go off!! Not looking forward to this Christmas dinner at all!! Think this is why I've been a little too vocal in some of my posts, Just totally upset!!!!

Sorry to hear about your stepson Pete. Problem is you can't force him to take them. Atavan or Lorazepam is a good calming drug. Dissolving in the mouth.
Sorry to hear about your step-son and your family situation Pete. As for being upset, and "a little too vocal in some of your posts" no problem, you are bound to be stressed under these circumstances, I know I would be. I have never had to deal with someone with a mental illness at a family get-together, but I have had to deal alcoholism and the "time bomb" it could be. Take care, and I really hope you do have a Merry Christmas.

Sorry to hear about this. Hope you can get this issue solved somehow. This cannot be good for any of you. What a shame that he can't be kept in until he stabilizes.
Sorry to hear. Having worked in mental health care I can see how frustrating it can be trying to get help. Theybhave guide lines they must follow and with the Policem unless he is a threat, only thing they will do usually during biz hours is sent him to a ER doctor to be interviewed. Its sad how things are. Especially when its a family member. I dont want to remember the things I seen while working there with the patients. Its not a nice place to be. I been spit on, kicked, punched, tackled, threatened, bit, and more. Its a tough thing to see. I hope things work out for you, merry christmas
we had our oldest son isolate himself form the family this year for a POA He wont be around anymore she must have some hold on him, hopefully things work out for you for Christmas, good luck and try to have a good one!
It's sad to hear when a family member has mental problems like that i had a aunt that after a high fever when she was a child become mentally handycaped my grandmother gave her to a mental institution we would go visit her at the holidays because visiting was very limited they would not let us in on other days about 5 years back he stopped taking her meds and passed away.. on Christmas eve then last year my aunt broke her hip on her way to my grandmothers. everything will aways get better as long as you have a wonderful family you can make it through anything
Sorry to hear that Pete, my oldest nephew suffered similar, when he took meds he felt good then thought he did not need them, of course not taking them he heard voices etc., my youngest nephew's wife banned him from the house and alienated him from thier kids, his situation caused my sister endless grief, long story short, we wish we could have done more for him, the 'health system' in USA is no better than yours it seems when it comes to mental illness, he died an early death at age 50 in very poor health, the only thing that helped him was Salvation Army and we are very grateful to them, be strong, we hope you can find some way to help him.
Dave

I think everyone has a friend or relative with mental health issues. My mom struggled with it for years and it was very tough for my sister and I at times -especially with a disabled father. As for drugs like Ativan (Benzo's) they are extremely addictive and the withdrawal from them is nasty so you have to be careful with them.
Sorry to hear about your stepson Pete ! I have a brother with mental health issues and he was just released from the hospital as well. His Dr. was changing up his meds and he really went sideways for a bit . I have a lot of respect for the Dr as he admitted my bro and he stayed inside until he had stabilized, sent him home for a long weekend, back inside for a week until everything was back to normal. A lot of people don't realize that a mentally out of control person has to be certified before they can be admitted. This certification can be done by the police or by Dr's of course. They cannot restrain or medicate these people otherwise. Its really tough to see these precious people struggle, and really amazing and scary to see how the drugs can manipulate the mind. My brother is an amazing guy and I love him a lot !
Hope you can keep positive Pete. My brother in law's ex wife and mother of his child has severe schizophrenia and it's tough ALL the time. I am amazed at how well he handles it. He manages to stay positive. I don't know how he does it.
Sorry to hear Pete. I have had friends like this, but never a family member. I hope it will all work out for you and yours for the Holidays. All the Best! Ken

Thanks guys, & Steve who was able to spell "Schizophrena" this illness is unbelievable !!! This all came about a few yrs ago when he went out to BC to live on a island with a bunch of "hippies" Anytime you mention that to someone who knows the area they say 'Oh,the island with the blue haze over it" From what weve found out,if there is a chance of have Schizophrena, smoking up brings it out faster than a frieght train, & he had no symptoms before going out west other than being a little slow in school as a youngster. He's like Dr. Jeckle & Mr. Hyde when off the meds & I think about a mth. ago he came home from work [lost that job now] all glassy eyed, then 3 wks. later he's "off the rails" Dr. told him he couldn't smoke up or it would send him off, but I guess he got with his his "BUD'S [he's 35 yrs.old ]He denied doing it but I knew he was "ON" something!! He completed a cousre at Niagra College for cooking & has been able to get a job "NO PROBLEM" but the the voices come & he goes off & the jobs gone & so's he!!!! I assume the voices tell him he doesn't need the Meds he's OK w/out them??? Thanks again for the support, & I appologize for being "a little outspoken" on some topic's here!! Pete

You don't have to apologize Pete ! This is a tough condition and I can't imagine mixing Schiz with a bit of attitude and a lot of bad influences. That would be a dynamite combo. Take care man and I will pray you all have a great Christmas inspite !!
Thanks everyone for your concern & wishes. We had a rough start to Christmas as Richard showed up at 10 AM for a 5 PM diner sitting?? Janice wished him a "MERRY CHRISTMAS" he obviously heard something different & went off on us, went out the door & never came back for diner, so in a "good" way it made it easy for the rest of us to have a nice get together & meal & not be sitting on edge waiting for the "explosion" but very concerned as to how to get him help when he refuses to acknowledge that he he has this "mental disability" His dad said it right I think, we can't force it on him but have to wait till he does something that will put him in jail again & hope they get him help or commit him, & also hope the health system changes & they don't release him 4 hrs after entering the hospital!!!!!!
