choke spring


Does anyone know where i can get the spring that is mounted behind
the cover on the exhaust manifold ??
this spring controls the choke on the carb.
It is for a 6cyl single barrel.

It should be called a choke thermostat. Some guys just call it a choke heater or choke spring also.

in my shop manual Supplement it sort of shows it
I will try and remove it tommorow.
I'm guessing the bolt will break and i will have to drill it out.

I just looked up the GM number. It's 3821564 and fits up to 67 if that helps.

By the way, what's wrong with your's? It's not just needing adjustment is it?

Tried adjusting but maybe im not letting it warm up long enough.
If it fits up to 67 Lordco should still have it.
it seems to open 1/2 way maybe under throttle it will open more,
if it is not raining i will let it run for 1/2 hr outside. wife shoots me if i let it
run inside garage cause fumes get in the house.
what is it called in the GM book?

I have tried the usuall parts stores for this part and also the 283 V8 version,  no luck anymore.

they use to be readily avail and cheap(10bucks), but i guess in the last 5 years they have stopped making them
Let me know if you find a new one

I have two cars sitting in the shop with 194's still in them complete with all parts.  If you let me know by the end of the week, I can remove one and send it before I head to Florida.
I think that is a coil of spring steel isn't it.  Heat causes it to loose tension and the choke pull off flips the butterfly.  (Something like that)

Yes, bi-metal strip that expands and contracts. You can test them by gently warming them. Not totally accurate but at least it shows if they still have some movement. Just don't heat the crap out of it!

check your heatrizer valve to see if it is stuck in the open position, they tend to sieze up,but they are rebuildable......located directly below the carb in the exhaust manifold

They are hard to find. For my 283, I ordered one from here:

Not cheap ... $37.00 (shipping included).
There are some on eBay that ship only to the States.

The mounting screw was toast when I went to remove mine. Soak it good and it might come out. I had to drill and tap mine.

the heat riser valve is stuck in the open posistion, is that a problem ??
It has been like that for years. i can find the spring for that..

an open riser valve is a definite problem for proper choke operation.Here's how it should work.When the engine is cold, step on the throttle ,the choke valve should snap closed [ activated by a bimetalic choke spring [ the one you are looking for]next to the exhaust manifold],pump the throttle 2-3 times,the choke plate should pull up the fast idle cam to its highest position , start the engine ,the vacuum pull-off should pull the choke plate open approx 1/8 in. , tap the throttle and fast idle cam will drop a little lower,now with the heat riser in the closed position the bimetalic is heated pulling the choke plate open, the fast idle cam drops to the idle position.The heat riser should open and close as the motor is reved,the return-spring returning the riser-valve to the closed position.......it sounds like your choke spring is ok,try freeing up the heat riser [CTC ReleaseAll works good] be patient !!Igot my choke & carb working on my 64 Beaumont 194 ci working perfect [all original parts] good luck!!

The heat riser will have no effect on the choke operation UNLESS you are driving in -30 conditions.  I have gutted many heat risers in 6cyls and taken them off V8s and they have no effect.    Perhaps a slight longer warmup.  which does not matter in summer temps.

THe choke thermostat spring is the most important.

NOTE: if the heatriser is stuck closed, that is bad.  Be sure it is either stuck OPEN or remove it completly.

i made sure it was only stuck in full open, next time i remove the manafold i will put a new spring in it, but im told they seize up quite easily, and i would rather it was stuck fully open.
This car is only going to be driven on warm sunny days anyway.
I can pull up on the spring for the choke when the motor is cold, so im going to let it warm up for 30 min sitting on the driveway tomorrow and see if i get any movement out of it..

Im hoping this little 6 dies so i can put in a nice 283 to make it purr.
but im out of $$.
Found a real nice one for $3500 from a 64 Chevy II
and he will rebuild it for me, complete with motor mounts and everything else.
really tempting !!

Ground bolt off and re-tapped. Cleaned out the inner part and spring seems to move better.
Poured Boiling water on it and got a full 45 degree deflection on it so i think it is ok..
snowed today !! so i could not leave it on the driveway running for 30 min.
but also that may not be long enough when the temp is barley above freezing..

let it run on driveway today. finally got full deflection to open butterfly fully
but seems to stick every once in a while, Im going to see if i can find some grease to put on it the will withstand the heat..
