Really any small quad will be good for the kids, there all similar. I would stay away from the cheaper new asian ones from CDN tire etc.. Parts availability and quality will be a issue. Try to stick with polaris, can am, kawasaki, suzuki etc.
Are you going to get some bigger quads for yourself?? I did alot of research and bought a new 2011 can am 800r outlander this year. I always had yamaha since I was a kid.

i had a little Yamaha 80 for our kids. Great machine but don't get one with gears as they kick the heck out of the shifter and it keeps getting stripped out on the splines.
I had an '05 Arctic Cat 650 (Kawasaki V-twin). I Loved it, but I did a few mods to it. My dad and brother both have stock '07 Kawasaki Brute Force 650i's, and they're great too.

I"am on my second Polaris the one that i have know is a sportsman 500 HO. Both my brothers also have Polaris we never had any problems,in over 12 years.One thing to keep in mind is that, if you are going to buy some machines buy it for what you are going to use it for.My brothers and I use our machines mostly for moose hunting.We all have 500's and they have lots of power to pull a moose out of the bush,and they're good on gas.So try to buy machines that are about the same on gas.My cousins have a 650 and 700 and if we go out for a full day they have to bring two extra gas cans compared to my one.My good friend has a Polaris 330 4X4 and its great on gas. Good luck on your search. I know in October a dealer here in Ontario had great deals on them I almost was going to sell mine because they were so cheap. Glenn
Thanks for the input guys. That Can Am looks like you could go logging with that beast. 2-3 logs behind it pulling them outa the bush I haven't heard anything bad about any one brand. I guess it's about options like heated grips, winch, power steering? I can't go any bigger than a 250 for my son, since it is auto and I can govern it. The smaller atv's are all 2X4. On used is there anything to watch out for ....such as hours....etc. I thought going used first until my kids grow a little more.

I chose the Can Am for the power and reliability of the quad. Plus the power steering, winch, bumpers and 3 year warranty etc. Many of the other quads don't come with winch and bumpers etc. You would have to add these on yourself or the dealer could do it for you for more money.
When buying a used quad the general condition will tell you the whole story on it for the most part. Scratches and dings etc are just normal wear and tear on these. If it looks pretty beat up walk away. Most older and smaller machines don't have hour meter's, it doesn't take long to rack up alot of hours on quads. The biggest thing is check and make sure regular maintenance has been done. Most machines will run a very very long time with proper regular maintenance.
Some quads are better than others in certain area's, just depends on what you want to do?? Trail ride, play in the mud, etc.
