How often should a carb be rebuilt?
Permalink Closed

I'm guessing it depends on the model, how many miles are put on the car etc, but is there a guideline as to how often a carb should be rebuilt?  (Mine is coming up on 25 years and is looking a little "gooey".)

Hmmm.  So a Carter that's been untouched for 20 of it's 25 years on the car is due for a clean...

Not necessarily, as long as the car has been used on a regular basis.

Whew, thanks Carl. I "mighta" run out & rebuilt both AFB's when not required!!! Too say the least, the 64 does get driven & "HARD" at times!! Nothing beats the sound of 2 afb's wide open & the exhaust just a "singing"  !!!! 7000 mi. last summer!!!

Thanks for the feedback all. I'll give it a clean and keep an eye on it. (I hope to be rcving a factory correct Carter in the coming weeks, so once the current carb fails, the original will go on.)

If it's a holley, can of carb cleaner over the course of the summer, should help out. (unless it's a holley, then problems arise no matter what you do)
