Did he ever buy you as much as a coffee?  I'm not suggesting he was was tight, no, I'm saying for a fact he must have had some Scottish blood in him  smile . He never paid full price for anything. He once told me that Bay Day was his favourite day of the year, you know the one day sale at Hudson Bay when the entire store is like 80% off

no matter if a swap meet was big or small I would find him digging in a box of parts looking for buried treasure.

Well to be Politically Correct,I can say I've never met someone who could so precisely Split a Penny down the middle. As for coffee? We would leave on Road Trips from my house and my wife would make us BOTH a coffee, but after a gang of us car guys drank at Hillars one night the next morning he wouldn't give us a coffee. We had to go to McDz. So needless to say after my wife heard this there was no more Coffee for You!As for the Hood story,I was running hours ahead of Pete and Hillar. He called me that night when he got home to tell me about the missing hood and see if I would go get it? I had just got home from days at Carlisle too.I was not too Thrilled to take my Big Block Suburban back to South of Batavia, New York and see if it would fit in the back of it.It was NOT going on the roof!! Remember this is for the '69 Bonneville Wagon not a Honda. After doing this I wanted some compensation,Guess What! 12 SCHILTZ Beer!! Does It come Any Cheaper??

Well, after heading home from a road trip in his Subaru we HAD to stop at Smokin' Joes for cheap gas before we hit the border. Just before the bridge I smell gas,What the hell? He had a trunk full of Jerry cans and one had fell over. What a Bomb!

That's too funny.  And the good ole guy was a lawyer and earned how much!  It just adds to an already great story.

Gasoline prices were a pet peeve of his. He had found this place called Star on the Danforth in Toronto that sold 91 octane for only 3 cents more than regular. it was full service too. If you use premium you will know it generally has a 10 or 12 cent differential. Anyway he convinced me to start gassing up the Caddy there. That lasted about three tankfuls though because the place was so sketchy I was worried about being hijacked down there, not to mention it was a 20 minute drive from my house BUT that never phased him, he was saving 7 cents a litre !

The other thing to know is that if he found a good deal he couldn't just buy one of whatever it was, he'd buy multiples and when I say multiples I mean 6 or more not two or three. He had a special penchant for Dollar store bungee cords and all things Princess Auto even though he'd be the first to ridicule you if he saw you shopping there.biggrin

I really don't understand why he was so tight with his money. confuse He had no dependents except for his car collection! Another funny thing is how Mark used to call him Hillary! biggrin He also always had a paperboy bag on his shoulder at Carlisle which we also teased him about. wink

I think it was something he learned from his Father. I am very very fond of his Dad but as an Estonian immigrant to Canada back then I am sure being frugal was the only way to make a good life in Canada. Living through WWII in Estonia probably has something to do with it as well. His Dad drives an 1980 Monte Carlo that looks as good today as the day he bought it.

I know what Hillar earned from his employment as a corporate lawyer and it was a salary some folks would dream about, and many would consider a good Lotto win. His penny pinching was just one of those things that made him who he was and so endearing to those of us who were fortunate enough to have known him. smile

What about the straw hats that made him look like a farmer Pete?

Interestingly enough though, you probably never saw him downtown at work or out on the town. His closets were full of Hugo Boss, Nautica, Jones New York, Bill Blas suits and clothes. Always the professional in those settings and he would never embarrass you at a ****tail party or night at the theatre.

Ok Earl,

We all know him through the car Hobby but few of you will know he was a distinguished member of the Royal Canadian Yatch Club as well. In fact his license plate frame on his Subaru said "I'd rather be Sailing"

Hillar was a camelion in may ways, equally at home at the RCYC Regatta Ball and at home at a swap meet looking like a poor boy. What a wonderful quality in a person when you think about it.

Hillar was also an accomplished skier and in his younger days was an instructor at Devil's Elbow. He also had a passion for shooting and he had many trophies from shooting competitions. He had several interesting guns as well, all legally owned and licensed, including the Magnum 44 complete with Dirty Harry under the sports jacket holster.

You are correct Ray, I only attended car shows and swap meets with him so I did not see him in his work environment or elsewhere. I was unaware of his other interests in yachting, skiing and shooting. He sure did enjoy bartering and haggling with vendors at the swap meets! smile
