Where to start on my 72 lemans


Hi everyone. I am at the stage of final assembly of my 72 lemans now that the body and paint are now done. It have had his car for 7 years now and I have missplaced alot of little items, clips bolts brackets you name it, and I am really over my head trying to figure out on how to go about doing it right from start to finish, almost like how it was first put together in the factory. If anyone knows of a site or book that covers this that would be geat.

As for books. A shop manual for a 72 or a reprint is fine.  The restoration guide for the GTO will help. As for sites PY forums ...lots off Lemans guys and they know their cars.
Try looking for a 72 cheap.........All the little stuff is hard to find, but out there on Ebay for a price.
What needs to go on??? Is the fenders, hood on....do you mean the clips for the windows, rocker chrome. Int in or out? Pic would be nice

72 luxo and when you can't find that clip or part? Just buy a replacement and as soon as you do , guess what? You find the original, been there/done it!

No the body is not together, everything is painted and ready to go I just want to be shure that I dont miss anything when it appers to be all there.

Also how could I lift the body off the frame without having a hoist or body lift, I am not happy with the frame paint that was used and I want to be able to get to all places, I have a very limited funds and a small one car garage

i block the body up with 4by4s and get the frame as low as i can and slide the frame from under the body remove wheels and use floor jacks!

If you are taking off the body.....buy new body mounts. I also suggest body tape to the edges.
Run electrical.....Put your heater core back in. Brake booster etc

Use a cherry picker and put soft fabric between the body and the straps. A 4X4 and saw horses will hold the car. You can lift the rear by putting the straps through the taillights.

For my car I used Krylon for touchups
I would get the car as high as possible and spray bomb the areas you don't like.

magnet paint is alot better. it doesnt require a top coat. its pricey though, $140. a gallon. it looks just as good with a gun or a brush. the more humidity, the faster it dries. it feels like a powdercoat when dry. 1 gallon is enough to do 1 & 1/2 of your car

it goes pretty far. its avail in gloss or satin. the satin looks original.

I love your Phrase "save a classic, crush an import" tin indian, thats awsome. Nothing is more gut wrenching seeing big massive junk yards in big cites from 20-30 years ago, all those crome bumpers still attatched to flatened classics.

If you need to lift the body off without scratching it , your eight friends should be nakkkked . Six to lift , one to guide and one to point and giggle . :)

Por 15 is a good product if the part is rusty or sand blasted it needs a rough clean surface to adhear to . I have a frame sprayed with it for a few years now and no rust . Two coats gloss with two coats of satin .
All inner areas were oiled after .

Yeah, just not happy with the way the frame turned out, there is some piting that I wish was filled and smoothed. The frame was completed about 5 years ago and I have gained alot of knowledge since then. I have spent way to much on this car for me to sit back when it is done and not be happy with the results.
