That Highway is too narrow through there for the volume and speed.
I was out on the 401 today for about 90 minutes going to and from a funeral visitation in Oshawa. I set my cruise on 118 kph. and I'm getting run off the road at that speed which is 18 over
Every day is a new adventure. In just over a year I've had a transport blow a tire in front of me and had to dodge large chunks of rubber, I've seen a truck jackknife and go into the ditch while the van in front of me loses control (the roads were slushy) and does about 4 360's and saw a guy in a pickup's trailer start a speed wobble sending the truck across three lanes. Good times!
Well Todd we know that the Transport traffic is way too heavy on that road, I've had a guy just wander into my lane, he could have fallen asleep I figure, luckily the left shoulder was wide enough for me to get on it then get on it and get the H away from him. I had a guy in a heavy rain storm, in a Lincoln Town car ride my bumper until I moved over to the centre lane, as he got beside my door I see his front tire stop and we're doing over 100 kph, OH boy he's hydro-planning so I drop the hammer and move to the right just as he starts spinning out, I look in my rear view and all hell is breaking loose. I've had garbage bins fall off trucks in front of me, plywood loads and a pinic table too.....I feel your pain driving that everyday
Yes, it can be a real joy. I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling about all those garbage trucks from Toronto heading to the dump near London. Those trailers don't look like they get inspected very often.
Can't see what Todd posted, just a white square, but think it might be the clip of the truck coming through the median. On my trip to the states my friend Brian & I both commented on the fact "you can't see the opposite lanes of traffic on the interstate" it's so far away from your own lanes there's "NO WAY" that a north bound vehicle will come across all that bush into your lane. Whereas here on the 400 series all we have is that little "concrete" barrier separating the opposite flow of traffic, & from what I saw on the news last week, it won't hold a truck from coming through it. Whose bright idea was this, even when outside of the city if it's not the barrier, it's only a small grass median??? Guess the YANKS know how to build roads & MAINTAIN them

That was wicked ... I saw many wild things happen while doing a 7 year commute in the small stretch of the 401/427 from downtown T.O. to Mississauga.

Todd, most of the trucks haven't been "governed" yet & none from the USA have been done. Mc GOOFY brought the law in but from what I'm hearing from my friends I worked with, "there's no inforcement" unless you get caught at over 105km. Some of the larger company's have done it, but the drivers "hate " it when they go stateside & get run over by the US trucks doing 75MPH & their stuck at 62 MPH [105Km.] My friend drives Gravel truck, gets paid by the load, so if they cut his truck back he looses a load a day!!! No one has seen if the MOT or DOT has the equipment to check the computers on board to see if they have been "castrated" I'm glad I'm retired from that mess, the last 10yrs. it wasn't "FUN" anymore, all the responcibilty, put on the driver, for condition of truck wether co. truck or 0/0, paper work in order etc. How many of you out there check you cars wheel nuts, bulbs, exhaust, tire tread, insurance & ownership + DOT documents & a whole list of other things everyday, then get blamed if your late for a del. or p/up when the highway was blocked or shipper was late loading trailer, so now your behind schedule,& it's "STILL" your fault for late!!! Don't miss it at all other than when I see a nice PETE rolling down the road & think "yep, like to try that one out,for about 10mi. then walk away from it"

ever try driving the 401 at 100km./p/hr. you'll get run over if you don't do at least a "buck twenty"!!!! Tried it one day in the Ol P/up truck, wasn't a pleasant trip, finally took it up to 120 & was still too slow for the traffic flow!!!

i hate driving on the highway but its a must for me. My trucks goverened at 105 and i dont mind it at all. I find most of the transports are not also. I usually try to take backroads whenever i can because its a nicer drive and at least something to look at (like old cars)!! This is actually my last week, ive been laid off for they say three months and then i come back and train somebody for a month or so , then its off to Mexico!!
Easterners dont think the west is left out, you have us beat on shear volume of traffic but as far as yo yos go if would say we might have you beat. i dont even drive to the city anymore and espially not while its snowing, these guiniesses speed up, with bald all seasons. you should see the carnage
Some may disagree but I think having governors on trucks was a good idea. It used to be pretty hairy having a rig on your rear end doing 120kmh
I know what you mean. My wife and I had a bad experience coming through Quebec back in the early 90s before we had kids. We were driving back from Ontario on the TCH east of Montreal, late at night in the pouring rain. There was lot of construction on that particular part of the highway, which had been whittled down to one lane with no shoulder and nowhere to go but straight ahead.
My wife was driving, when pretty suddenly a huge 18 wheeler was right on our bumper. He kept forcing us to go faster in order to stay ahead of him, and he wouldn't back off. We were driving way faster than we wanted to in the conditions, but we had no option. He kept it up for miles until we got through the construction zone. We didn't get a plate number; if we had I would have filed a complaint. But it was the most harrowing highway driving experience we ever had.
I remember witnessing two transport trucks chasing a guy in a pickup on the 401 near Chatham about 4 years ago. The pickup driver must have really done something to p*ss these two truckers off. They were easily doing at least 120kmh and were weaving from lane to lane trying to catch him. Crazy!
I really want to vent on this but poeple are on a mission when they drive and it gets them in trouble. I am a emergency services worker and i know its going to be a busy shift when the snow flies on or near the 401.
