Yeah, mexico is getting a bit concerning... i think the resorts are quite well regulated. A lady at my work got back from a month in texas along the border and she says you can hear gunshots every night and there's lots of random drivebys to innocent people in those towns...
Cuba on the other hand! Very safe anywhere, imo. A little bit of selling of stuff here and there, but i didn't find it too pushy or annoying. I'd highly recommend it!!
I spent the entire week in Havana... if its a resort you're after i'd recommend waiting for a little bit warmer weather and go for it! Depending on your expectations, i'd book the best resort you can afford (4 or 5 star). Take a star or two off the rating in cuba compared to local expectations, and one star off compared to mexico. Biggest criticism i hear is the food, it was bland, but quite what i'm used to at home so i didnt mind!
Here are a few more pics... Plaza dela Revolucion Havana Cafe ElFloridita, where Ernest Hemingway hung out and the Daquiri was invented Colon Cemetary, 2nd largest in the world

If you are an old car nut, a cigar fanatic, spanish jazz music lover or a culture buff, then Havana is for you. We went a few years back. I was very busy snapping shots of passing 50's tin and smoking on the average of three cigars a day! We found some decent and interesting restuarants thanks to research on the magazine "Cigar Afictionado's" web site. We stayed at the modern 5 star (thier rating) highrise Melia Cohiba Hotel. We did do some time in Varadaro........and it was OK. But next time: We would like to stay in Havana only, stay at the "Hotel National", continue to research places to eat ahead of time, and I'm bringing back my limit, plus The Girlfriend's limit in cigars.
I could have brought back wayyy more cigars!! I went to the Melia a couple of nghts to the Havana Cafe, enjoyed the show alot! and the dancing afterwards....
I agree about staying at the Nacional or the Parque Central...both nice hotels... What did you think of the Melia?
I noticed some diesels, but it appeared many had their original 6's in them...
Carl, it seems like the pictures i have posted are all sunny! but it was cloudy a fair bit... nonetheless great weather for walking around Havana!
The Melia was ultra-modern by Cuba standards. Lacked the charm like the Hotel National, but we were happy it was modern as we experienced a large tropical storm while there. The main lites went out, but we were OK as the the place sported stand-by generators. Something one does not think of when booking a holiday. We hung out at the Havana Cafe almost every night. Cohiba Siglo two's was my bed time cigar of choice as I recall. Nice to be at a place where they welcome cigar smoking as a passtime. I think it's a tie between Cigars and tourists as the most important insustry in that country. I felt totally protected. Hopefully you went to the Partigas factory while there?

24 hour power seems to be a luxury in many places I've been!! I went without power and water one night in Cambodia...let a gazillion mosquitoes in the room just trying to get some airflow! and in Nepal, it's power out every night at the hotel i stayed at!
Partagas was closed for tours when i was there...but i did get out to the countryside and went into the Trinidad factory -no photos allowed!... i like the look of the twisted cap end on those ones. I also picked up some Hoyo de Monterrey's to try....
