yessir.....a rather personal decision. What works for one, might not work for you. I retired at 42 with pensions, no debt and no plan. I lasted just over 2 years, and had to do something. I considered risking it all on a business, but realized that I probably dont have the motivation required.  A job I am familiar with came looking for me, so I've been back at it for 6 months. I like being back on a schedule and its nice to have some gravy for the car hobby. I hope to raise a 30x80 shop soon and fill it with parts cars and projects. I raised 3 kids with income near the poverty line, so I know full well that $$ is the deciding factor for most. If you truely enjoy what you do with your waking hours, you are a rich man! (or woman)

Stone, we both traveled a similar path. I've been twisting wrenches here in Gagetown for 4 years now. I'll go till I'm 55, or earlier if I get tired of it.

As mentioned above, eliminate your debt as soon as you possibly can. i preach that to the youngsters here at work on a daily basis.

As for RRSP's, I have one, but the only thing I've ever been able to make money at is real estate/land. wink

I won't be officially retireing until 65. Will need to work till then as I'll be 61 when my youngest turns 18 and heads off to college or whatever post high school. So by the time I'm 65 he'll have graduated college/'university. Then it will be the 6 kids turn to take care of us!!!
That's what happens when you finish grad school at 31 and get married at 31!! you're ten years later in everything than most everyone else.

I can appreciate your position. I have worked steadily and in reasonably good jobs since age 21 but I did not have my first child until age 36, which is why I have a ways to go before I can take the pay cut required for retirement or a career change.

Marty's on the money with this one. Carry no debt when you retire, this means no mortgage, don't carry credit card balances either.
Downsize the family home, we moved to a small town and bought a house 1/2 the size of our old one.
You'll make it if you really want to.

I retired from government work at 50 in 2002 making 42K.
Previous I had set up 2 IBO (initial benefit option) lump sum accounts.
Used 1 IBO to pay off mortage on modest home, paid off 2001 model car, bought a 1969 Camaro, had no credit car balances.
I will soon take out the other IBO when I am 59.5 this summer (had a sum 147% of original IBO).
I will use part of this IBO, and roll over the rest into another account.

I live a modest life with my wife of 32 years.
