'66 SD 327 convertible production numbers...


A buddy was asking me how many '66 Beaumont SD convertibles were produced, to which I replied around 60 (per the 57 mentioned in  the production numbers thread: http://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/forum.spark?aBID=118110&p=3&topicID=20435871 ). 
Then he asked me how many came with 327's.  I suggested maybe 10% of them (as I think the vast majority seem to have come with 283's). 
Since my answer was off the top of my head I'm wondering:
-Do you think the guess of 10% is close?
-Can one find out the actual number of '66 327 SD convertibles somehow?
-Was I correct in saying the vast majority were 283's.

Interesting. I just spoke with the always a good-guy George Zapora at GM. I asked him if he could help narrow down how many of the '66 SD's had 327's. He indicated that they do know that there was a combined total of 177 of the 73667 (Beaumont Custom convertibles) and the 13667 (Chevelle Malibu and SS convertibles) produced with 327's. (I hope I got that right?)
I'm not sure how/if this provides any pieces to the puzzle or not. I'm guessing that if we knew how many 13667's were produced (vs the 73667's) we could use that same ratio to estimate the number of 327 Custom/SD's, and then apply the same ratio to the number of Custom's vs SD's? (Or we could just say "not many" LOL.)

i have the 283 66 sd rag and 180 comes to mind but not sure , i found a 66 custom rag thats a factory 327 4sp bench seat the other day, thats got to be rare?

with the info ithat comes to the reg , i find that the chevelle /Beaumont figure is almost 2-1

in 66 beaumont there were 12,827 or around there
in 66 Chevelle is around 20,112
which is 1.56 chevelles per Beaumont


individual figures for 1966
13667 Malibu 8 cyl Convertible ( 757 produced for sale in Canada)
73667 Beaumont Custom 8 cyl Convertible  (565 produced)

thats 1.34 Chevelle converts per Beaumont convert

so with the same % id guess out of 177 for both models?



what would that be around 75 or so Beaumont rags custom and SD with 327?


i assume that figure you have is for Custom/Sport Deluxe and Malibu/Super Sport because of the A51 option?

im not 100 % on the 57 #for 1966 SDs,someone on here sent that in ,but that would make 1 out of every 9.9 1966 Custom rags a Sport Deluxe, which seems to fit

i imagine a higher percentage of 327s went into Sport Deluxes than Customs

Using that logic, if it is roughly 1 in 10, that means that there may not have been more than a dozen '66 SD ragtops with the 327produced.  (Which could explain why we only have one in the registry.)  Hopefully a couple of nice 4 speed will pop up some day...

I guess I should do that. All I have is the original owner telling me that's the motor and it's a manual suffix canadian motor that is date correct to the car carb to pan. I guess it would give me the production numbers. I didn't buy it off of the original owner but when I contacted him and I described the motor he ID'ed it. What do you think on the production. I think there's 800 or so SD's so how many 4 spd's? We should have a friendly bet on the numbers off of the block to the originality of it to the car. It would be fun. I already have the carb I think it's a 4027S or 28S the manual trans one, I could look again. I could ID the rest on your request. A kind of how to find a numbers car without gm docs thread. Your really good at the numbers so it should be easy. I always have to dig all over the place to find it.

Just to let everyone drool. In Maple Ridge, BC, there is a friend of mines brother who has a 66 SD rag, big block, 4 speed. He usally brings out to some shows like the Port Coquitlam show in the summer. He has it for decades. It now has a 350, Turbo 350 in it because 20/25 years ago he has out dirt biking and the front axle broke and he has been paralyzed ever since. I don't think Danny would mind me telling his story He has all the original numbers matching big block etc. and has said that he may put it back together with for his grown up son someday. He is a super guy and pre accident was a big demolish derby driver along with big rollover competition competitor going back the days of such events at the PNE in Vancouver in the good old days. (70's/80's)

Its still here Carl-he also has his restored 66 Sport Deluxe car 283 hardtop-absolutely beautiful frame off nut and bolt restoration-and he doesn't really ever seem to drive it either
