Another Pontiac comin home?

I have a solid cash offer to put on this car, and an appointment to do it today. I am curious as to what the CP crowd thinks a good reasonbale offer would be. (dont say $5) The description is accurate, I have seen the car locally in passing.  I talked my son out of buying the Saab he wants and consider this. He left the decision to me. I am not a huge fan of 80's cars, but this is growing on me, and I think the seller is in a bind. The tint probably isnt legal and I dont know what a 'ratchet shifter kit' is on an automatic with a tach? .  406? (I'll add pics after I post the text, as I have re-typed it 5 times.grrr)

Needs to sell quickly!!!400 Horsepower, 406 cu. in. chevvy engine, engine is bore and stroke. double pumper 750 CFI Holley. Line lock installed. 5'' monster Tach. Ratchet shift kit. Recently painted. Brand new front grill, Brand new headlights, brand new back lights, performance exhaust, brand new rims and tires, Absolutely no rust anywhere, frame is straight and mint. Brakes are new. MSD performance ignition system. Ignition system alone worth 2000$. Much more... In working state

These cars will eventually become of age for collectors - sooner or later

you know when you part with large sums of money, its nice to feel like you did well and dont feel hosed. I feel I can get the car for somewhere between 4500.00 and4800.00 and am convinced the seller is taking a  hit, but not that far out there, given the economy and time of year. Given that my car addiction is still in its infancy, I'd hope to avoid some mistakes that you lifers might have learned from. Thanks for any advice!

Cool car. I've had a couple Buick regals from that era and they are really nice to drive but the body twist is unbelievable for a car with a frame. The frames are a C-channel style and not fully enclosed. Other then that, they are much like a Chevelle or Beaumont to work on. There used to be quite a few of these cars around for parts but I'm noticing they are less common. Way better than a SAAB.

Stone, here's a Monte over near me. Comparable to the GP your looking at. Good luck.

Thanks Mike......good to use as a benchmark. Personally, I'd rather drive a Monty than a Grand Prix. That Monty is about twice the price, but in amazing condition. I should get a better idea tonight when I give it the once over!  It looks well priced to me, but what the hell do I know. My son is very anxious. I hope he can handle the insurance costs.

Its a cool car, great price. You will not lose at the price, especially if you were considering build cost...I don't agree that just because these cars are getting older that they'll be collectible, the muscle car era was a significant point in time, it didn't happen in past the 70's and 80's, nonetheless this is still a good buy!

Ratchet shift, is the type shifter, I'm not a big fan of them but it depends what you are used to... With the way he has the car set up, it should have a posi, so that's worth a few bucks too... your son will have a great cruiser at that price and will have some fun with it at the same time! if it runs nice, and the body is solid, you have that amount of $ in parts there!

Thanks AK......thats the way I see it, I little reassurance goes a long way for me! My son is relying on me to get him value for his buck, and hopes he'll have something unique to his crowd, I think this fits. Its a lot easier to decide for ones self, because if you mess-up, you have only yourself to blame.

I have to ask, how old is your son? This car is set up as a bracket/street racer, and will probably have lots of power. It could also have a reputation with the local enforcement crowd if it's been used to show off on the street. "marked car?" Anyway, hopefully your youngster is able to control himself and a hi horsepower car safely, thats all i would worry about.

thanks, daryle.

VERY good point Daryle! He is 21yrs old.  I suppose every 21 year old is different, and I would not have handled this car properly at 21. He bought a motorcycle about 2 years ago that was hell on wheels, and made me very nervous. He handled the excess power just fine, and is probably more mature than I am. There is still a big risk when peer pressure get involved. Its hard for a 21 yr old to walk away from a challange, and thats the part that scares me. He has had the same job for 4 years, has fantastic credit score, and is responsible in all other areas. He talks a big game, but I am confident enough that he will do the right thing. (fingers crossed). The car is owned by an older military member, so I doubt it 'marked', but I'm not positive of that.

To Daryle's point this is exactly why I gave my 21 year old son my old Fleetwood to drive. He can still get into trouble because for some reason that thing is a tire frier but the urge is a lot less driving around in a classic old Caddy. The only complaint I have is that when I clean the car I find atricles of female clothing in the back seat confuse

Stroker motor, verrry nervous if built well (hang on!!) I think ratchet shifter is a b&m if not mistaken, If posi, should hook. If no bondo, and interior is decent, I'd say car is worth 5500$. Now with that being said, I'd offer him 38-4000$.

Ray, as long as the female clothing you're finding in the back seat doesn't belong to him, he's past playing with toys.

Just got back. No Deal. I think it is fairly priced. I'll just list the goods and bads(more than one is a deal breaker for me)

Ray, tell me your not grinning at some level when the clothing gets found. If hes in a Fleetwood, why get a room when theres one right behind the driver?

1. Couldnt hear it run. Seller said too cold for a quick run in his unheated garage. (ya might wanna mention that one before a planned viewing)
2. Interior reinstalled with fasteners missing everywhere, ragged job, quite stained. No headliner.
3. Firewall patch 2 feet wide/heater and parts sitting in the trunk.
4. Not Posi and recent diff issues.
5. Master cylinder leaking bad.
6. Great body and frame, decent paint from what I could see through the dirt, chrome and glass is all good too. Lots of new parts.

Turns out to be a young guy who pretty much bought it as is, and is in over his head for time or budget or whatever in my opinion. Nice guy, and like I said, fairly priced, just not the car for my son, more like a project, and defintely built for racing. Thanks for the opinions!
