Montreal Police are on the job.

A 20-year-old man was pulled over in Montreal early Friday morning for allegedly driving more than three times the speed limit in a BMW sport utility vehicle.

Sgt. Genevieve Bruneau of the Surete du Quebec told CTV.ca the young man was clocked at 240 kilometres per hour, in a 70 km/h zone.

The man was travelling on Highway 720 at about 3 a.m. when he passed by police officers conducting a speed monitoring operation.

The driver pulled over as soon as police pulled out behind him, and came to a stop just before the entrance to the Ville Marie Tunnel.

Bruneau said police issued a ticket for $2,598, suspended the man's license and had the vehicle towed.

He also received 42 demerit points. After 15 points, drivers in Quebec are effectively unable to obtain or maintain a licence.

Bruneau would not confirm nor deny reports that the man works as a valet at a nearby hotel.

"The only thing I can tell you is that we gave him a ticket, but we are not currently investigating a theft," she said.

Bruneau said new laws in Quebec allow police to double set fines and demerit points when excessive speeds are reached, such as in this case.

Officers are also able to immediately suspend the driver's license for seven days.

Police can impose even harsher penalties on a second offence.

42 demerit points.?
Good thing he wasn't texting at the same time, they would have really thrown the book at him then.

If it was here [Ontario] the car would be confiscated on the spot ,wether it was his or not & think it's for 30days [could be wrong on the time] & imediate loss of license. Like the idea of double point loss though, that should make people "wake" up!!!!

Nazi germany is making a come back eh? You don't get in that kind of trouble if you stole the darn car. I have no trouble with high speed, depends on when, where, what traffic is like. I am quite capable of piloting my ta at 160 kph, would have to agree if I was doing it on the 401 in rush hour traffic would be a bit stupid. Should be on a case by case basis. It used to be find an unused strip of road and let 'er go. Too many people stopped it, over regulated safety on the track, so kids now run on the highways as cops don't turn a blind eye to the farm road drag strip. If you try to stop something, it seems to go underground and get 10x worse. Ask Obama how the war on pot is going? Remember prohabition? Not defending it, but on the 407 at 2 am on a monday night, in a porsche carrera doing 153 and they %$#% you for thousands, and impound your car on the spot (convicted by a *** on the highway, not a jury of your peers) Isn't that illigal by the way? (1 man as judge, jury, excutioner) Keep voting Liberal and watch more of your rights and freedoms go away. Sorry for the rant, I just hate these knee-jerk laws that keep getting thrown out at will. The laws are already on the books to deal with reckless driving already, need a judge to enforce the one's we have not make more! Whew.

In BC if your're caught doing 40k over the posted speed limit first you get a ticket, then they take a tow the vehicle and impound it.I'm not sure so don't quote me but I think I heard that they take your vehicle to the auction. And the legal limit for drinking is .05- 1 beer maybe depending on how well you're built. The laws they are getting tougher but not tough enough regarding DUI's- but that's opinion of course. Drive safe, get there alive.

I think being charged and going to trial is the right way to go. I don't hate cops but they are not god.

Priceless, i love it! Throw the book at him! I don't feel sorry for him at all... he was only charged, he'll go to court and have it reduced most likely. More than likely it wasn't his car, and hopefully they will lay theft charges on him too.... (he should have picked a country road, and his own car!)

Turns out the valet took it for a joy ride and the Hotel paid all the fees for the guest.
If it was BC the car would be up for auction
