I said 74, my buddy is swearing that his 70 came factory with HEI. We argued, I told him I'd ask the experts. I thought the 74 sd t/a was the 1st car that came with it.
I have just done a little web research on this. 1973 and 1974 GTO's could have points or unitized ignition BUT apparently starting May 1, 1974 Pontiac started to use HEI. 1975 was the first full model year that HEI was used and of course no GTO. Based on this a 74 GTO might have HEI.
I know from reading my 1973 Brochures and what not. definitely available on GTO in 73, well at least the booklets say so, just like they say the SD455 was available.
May be its the same as the magnetic pulse distributor available in the early years.
No, I had that one in my 66 big block GP. From the outside there was no hint that it didn't have points other than the wiring harness. It used the point style distributor cap.
I think it was available in 66 only for Canadian Pontiac but I'm still learning...
