I said 74, my buddy is swearing that his 70 came factory with HEI. We argued, I told him I'd ask the experts. I thought the 74 sd t/a was the 1st car that came with it.

A 1972 GTO could be ordered with Unitized ignition. What is the difference between HEI and unitized ignition?

I think Chrysler debuted it's electronic ignition in '73.

Agree 1975. My 75 Parisienne had HEI; my 74 Impala did not.

I have just done a little web research on this. 1973 and 1974 GTO's could have points or unitized ignition BUT apparently starting May 1, 1974 Pontiac started to use HEI. 1975 was the first full model year that HEI was used and of course no GTO.  Based on this a 74 GTO might have HEI.

1974 for HEI but as stated, the forerunner to the HEI called the Unitized Distributor was available in 1971 and 1972.

Ray, did you find anything actually showing a Unitized for 1973?

I thought 73 was a gap, no offering of any electronic ignition.

I know from reading my 1973 Brochures and what not. definitely available on GTO in 73, well at  least the booklets say so, just like they say the SD455 was available.

Haha, good point.

It's not in the parts book for 73.

I should check some more books maybe...

May be its the same as the magnetic pulse distributor  available in the early years.

Here is a unitized ign. started in 71 and phased out when the HEI came in.

No, I had that one in my 66 big block GP. From the outside there was no hint that it didn't have points other than the wiring harness. It used the point style distributor cap.

I think it was available in 66 only for Canadian Pontiac but I'm still learning...
