RE: Where are the old car prices going?

I feel the market will remain flat for quite some time. There's a lot of "outside influences" causing this in my opinion. Ethanol fuels, mandatory appraisals before you can license a car (here in Ontario), emissions rules, "stunt driving" laws and of course high gas prices makes many of us wonder if it's worth having an old car. There's a good chance legislation could ultimately kill the hobby.
Hopefully I'm wrong!

I agree with most opinions on this topic. Too many cars and not enough buyers. Qualified buyers (age wise as well as financially) having second thoughts adout the purchase(investment). I personally have had very good results the last five years with the classic car world. All I can really say is the RITE car WILL bring the RITE money and sell fast.............. Just my opinion.........

Hey Terry, you may be right, but it's the right cars that will sell and not the over priced plain-Janes. The
$5,000. resto project just hurts the whole picture. People look at some of which is just crap and figure they can't even think about getting into the game if that's what it costs now to play so they move on and buy a 7 yr old Mustang, Firebird or Camaro. I stare at amazement at some of the comments in regards to (what I consider to be) Kijiji junk. Car collecting people drooling in amazement that a particular convertible (for example) with no top, no motor, no transmission is for sale for a mere $3,500, oh ya, that includes the rust at that price, lol.
(Please note......I'm not refering to anyone or any car.......just examples). Market it for the $200. that it's worth
and let's keep it going.....otherwise it will just sit where ever it's sitting now, till somebody's kids haul it to the dump.

I've removed my comments regarding CAT Restorations in Abbotsford. Although I haven't
dealt with them personally or ever been there, I don't think I wish to suggest people look
them up. Should people do so on their own, that will be their choice without my assistance.
Sorry for any inconvenience and thank you to the members that were kind enough to share
their PM's with me.

The price of collector vehicles may be dropping but it could be just a correction of the overinflated prices of the last few years.I dont think it is the demise of the industry. Still seeing good turnouts at local car shows including lots of younger people. It will always be cheaper to buy than to build but that applies to a new car as well.Price doesnt really matter as long as you enjoy your car,the value others put on it is just their opinion.Enjoy the lower prices.

I happen to agree with Terry on this one.  We are getting older and the younger generation is not picking up on the 70's and later rides.  I support Terry's theory that the right car for the right money will sell.  Pete's friend with the fantastic looking Graham's is the perfect example.  I personally like the look of those cars but if he decided on a '57 Chev Bel Air to invest that kind of money in to,  the '57 would have been gone a long time ago.  Even to us aging teenagers,  those cars are not "Pop".   They will only appeal to a few of our generation,  let alone any of the younger "tech" generation.

in my opinion, i think the restorers are killing the market
why is it so much more expensive to restore a car in Canada than in the US?
ok, don't take into account the part prices being a little more expensive because of shipping across the border

cars cost ALOT more to restore in canada, compared to the us.reason# 1, a $249 item at summit costs $336. to my door, and thats through canada post. reason # 2 canadian cars are usually in much worse condition, than the us car. i,m sure there is alot more reasons as well as mere availability.

Today as I looked throught the various means of advertizing, I saw a 1956
Bel-Air ground up restoration for $25,000. I read where the white 66 Grande
Parisienne only got bid up to $11,000. I came across numerous cars for sale
in the $10,000 and under range (not including CAT Restorations), lol and
have seriously come to realize that prices are still dropping. I see nice stuff
in the $20,000 price range, just not moving at all. It's there ad after ad after
ad, soon to be year after year after........okay you get what I mean, lol.
I'm buying, but I'm shopping carefully........

Crazy as it sounds, I love the fact that some of these "expensive" cars aren't so expensive any more. We (hobbyists) may be able to claim these old cars back at realistic prices yet and the investors can find something new to spend on.

I know that may step on some toes, but seriously, let's be real here. Most "real" car guys don't have 1/2 million dollar cars because they love them, they have them for bragging rights.

And before you flame me for that, I have a very good friend who has a car like that... He is a "real" car nut but couldn't resist this one!

as low as car prices seem to dip, not so with parts. Every time I bid on a part on ebay and think I am bidding fair money I am out bid by someone with deeper pockets than me.

I do not think that what is going on with the e bay thing, actually represents what is happening in Canada. People bidding on e bay are probably mostly Americans and other countries. I go to and vend at swap meets in the southern Ontario area and i can tell you that , there is not much spending going on. I sell restored 55-56-57 Chevy parts and at one time it was a frenzy with people paying me what i was asking. Now it is like pulling teeth and all my parts i sell for less than what they are actually worth. I should learn the e bay thing and sell all my parts to Americans. They seem to know what stuff is worth and pay it with out whinning. Unlike us Canadians, i am sad to say. Cheers. George.
