I believe you can find the 1971 GT-37 engine/transmission production number breakdown but not the 1970. There were 20,883 1970 T-37s produced and 44,896 1971 T-37s produced. There were only 572 1971 L78 400 4BBL GT-37s produced with M21 4 speed manual transmissions. So can we estimate there were 1/2 that number in 1970?

The following information is from book by John Gunnell, 1961-2004 Standard Catalog of G.T.O. - Tempest - LeMans - Can Am - Grand Am.

Page 92: Tempest GT-37---(V8)---Series 233 (Mid-Year Addition)

NOTE 1: Total 1970 production of Tempest, T-37 and GT-37 two-door hardtops combined was 9,187.

NOTE 2: Total 1970 production of Tempest and Tempest GT-37 two-door coupes combined was 11,977.

NOTE 3: 1,419 1970 GT-37s (hardtops and coupes) were built.

NOTE 4: 42,047 1970 Tempests of all types were built.

NOTE 5: 5,148 1970 Tempests, T-37s and GT-37s had synchromesh and 36,899 1970 Tempests, T-37s and GT-37s had automatic transmissions.

Page 99: Historical Footnotes

Calendar-year sales of new"Tempests" by registered Pontiac dealers came to 184,913 units for a 2.6 percent share of the domestic industry total. Model-year production was 213,239 units for a slightly better 2.8 percent share of domestic industry output.

Option Installation Rates:

Of 213,239 Tempests built 88.7 percent (189,143) had automatic transmission, 6.8 percent (14,500) had a four-speed synchromesh transmission and remaining 4.5 percent (9,596) had three-speed manual transmissions.

My conclusion: Was it 5,148 or 14,500 4-speeds installed?

To answer my own question above, the 5,148 4-speed Tempests were built from mid-year (January, 1970 to the end of model year production in August, 1970. The 14,500 4-speed Tempests were built during the entire 1970 model year production from July, 1969 until August, 1970.

In 1970 if you ordered a 400 with a manual trans (3 or 4-speed) in your Tempest, you actually got a Ram Air III engine! 4.33 gearing was limited to engines that could hold up to the sort of buzzing that 4.33s would result in. 1970 was also the last year for factory 4.33s, 1971 they offered 3.90 but they were rare, only optionally coming on L78 400 M21 cars. After that it was 3.55 at best (they are pretty liveable). Pontiac got away from the revving Ram Air 400s after 1970 and went with torquey 455 engines for top performance (do not exceed 5000 rpm with the large stroke 455).

T-37 Fred, your car sounds awesome!
