Car show entry fees

About the only show that I pay to go to is the Oshawa Autofest.  At least there you have the chance to win engines, tool boxes and nice stuff.  The rest of the time I just go to local cruise nights.  I've won a couple of nice 50-50 draws at the local cruises.  Enough to pay for the gas for the summer.  As for the guys who stand around cutting cars up, call them on it.  They disappear real fast after being centred out.  It's just a dirty habit that people have gotten into at shows.  Constructive criticism is fine by me.  I'm a big boy.  Pointing out stone chips?  They are badges of honour for the 35 thousand miles we have put on the car since 1997.   biggrin

I read this thread and find it kind of interesting, especially some of the reasons why we won't pay to attend a car show, getting picked apart etc etc.

I go to cruise nights every thursday when the're on because I enjoy them and I want to see what's the next new one that we have not seen yet, the fellowship is fantastic, you cannot put a price on that (by the way cruise nights are no charge because some of us sponsor the events with pleasure). I couldn't care less if they find fault with my car, why because it's mine and I love it, most times the critics are people that want one but can't or won't afford it and jealousy cuts in.

As far as car shows most of them are charity fund raisers and any of you that have been involved in setting up a car show know of the time and work and EXPENSES involved in putting one on, if you never have been involved, try it sometime to get an appreciation of the people putting them on.

We'll have the Supperrun here in August 2012 and we have many meetings leading up to it and to be able to keep the participants cost down is quite a feat, again the sponsorship (we don't have GM give us an engine yet but I'm working on it). I do sponsor a big part of and I usually start putting money away towards it 18 months ahead of time.

I'm rambling but my point is - Go to Cruise Nights, Car Shows if you enjoy them, if you don't like the paying part so be it and go and enjoy the vehicles that are there, enjoy the fellowships and say thanks to the people that organize them, they're the real heroes.

I  2nd the well put. I go to shows to show people out there what cars used to look like and see people faces when they see something that Gramps used to drive, LOL. I know some are expensive but if u want to go pay up and if not don't go. Most of the local shows are 10 to 15 bucks. But to make someone smile or get a thumbs up when driving to or from the show, is priceless. :)

Well said.  There is so much more positive stuff that comes out of the shows I've gone to than negative.  The choice is up to us whether 20 bucks is too much or not.  We go to the odd movie and it costs the same and lots of them are only ho hum.  Lots of these shows are what you make of them and I appreciate the people who go through the effort of making them happen and sponsor them.  Not that it matters but I am well ahead in prizes, t shirts, and cash that I have gotten or won than the entry fees that I have paid.  If I can't stay as long as the show goes I just park my car in the lot too but it isn't the price that holds me back.  Lots of times one or two conversations with people make the whole drive worth while and I have no problem handling the car show lawyers, bring it on.

The point of this thread was to ask why the owners have to pay to "show" their cars while the spectators 'walk in" for FREE!!! We [the owners] are the ones with the "INVESTMENT" no matter how much we have in our cars!!! YES I was involved with putting a show on for over 25 yrs in Cannington Ont. BUT we charged the walk in crowd as well, & yes it was a PITA to fence off part of the park to do this, but we never had one complaint from car owners about the $10 entry when the spectators were paying as well. We were lucky to break even on our COSTS, park rental, disc jockey, ins. & cost of "overtime for township worker" to oversee the washroom & arena,+++ etc

I don't mind paying an entry fee, as it does cost the sponsoring Car Club money to put it on. However, anything more than $10 would be too much. I have attended shows that have a donation to a charity, no set price, just whatever you feel to donate. Its put on by a local club and I know they spend lots to put it on. They have live bands playing(rockabilly, mostly) and venders set up. Its a NO BS show. They put it on for the fun of it...The way it should be.
Looking at some of the comments at shows made about your cars, had to chuckle a bit. I had my 52 at a show, black primer(I painted it) and some guys come up and tell me they like it, but I should chop the roof, and lower it and paint it.. After listening to them go on and on, I finally told them to go buy there own car and do what they want with it. Another time, I was driving my 51, which was all original, I had some guys pull up and they were smirking about how slow it was (original 6 and 3 speed) and they made the comment "nice car"...To which I replied " Thats why I'm driving it, and your looking at it" They weren't impressed. But I've been told I have a bad attitude...LOL
