Hoping for some ideas here about what would cause there to be a strong gasolene smell in my Beaumont ? Seems to come in to the interior from engine side so I don't think it is exaust related. almost makes your eyes burn while driving unless windows are down. The fuel pump does not appear to be leaking, and I had a carb kit installed a couple of years ago. the car seems to be running normally other than this strong smell?? It also leaves a strong gas smell in the garage. Any sugestions ?? Thanks

Sounds like you have a fuel line leaking someplace, I would get a mechanic to look at it and pressure up the system, gas is not something to play around with.
I had that issue years back while driving the Father in Laws Pacer.....it burst into flames in the parking lot, and burnt to the ground in Grimsby On, before we diagnosed the exact problem. I might be paranoid, but I wouldnt use it again til I figured it out!
We've put about 35K miles on our Chevelle. Last summer we were driving along and all of a sudden smelled gas. The fuel pump bolts had decided to back off letting the fuel pump buck like a wild horse until it cracked the fuel line. We were fortunate not to have had a fire. It pays to go over everything in the spring just to be sure that nothing is coming loose. You just never know. This was a new one on me. I had a bit of an oil leak and thought it was the timing cover. NOT. You can have these cars for a life time and still get a curve ball thrown at you. About three years after we bought the car, a header bolt fell out. Check them too. I wouldn't be driving anything with the smell of gas until I found the source. Without a BIG fire extinguisher, you aren't going to put out a gas fire.
Whatever's wrong, best keep it out of the garage while you figure out the problem!. Get it up on a hoist somewhere immediatley after driving it and you'll probably find it!. Best o' luck!.

Check the fuel line connections from the fuel pump to the carb and around the carb for a leak. My Holley was leaking on to the intake last year and the fuel would burn off / evaporate from the heat of the intake. Raw fuel on a hot surface will evaporate and burn the eyes out of your head.
Usually you can see a discoloration of the aluminum or painted intake where the fuel has been sitting.
If it were a leak somewhere under the car I don't think you would notice it while driving.
If it was out the tailpipes or a tank leak it would be more noticeable with the windows down.
Thanks everyone ! I have made arrangements to take the car back to the guy who did my last tune up and rebuild of the carb two years ago, he is very good, so hope he can figure it out. Some of your comments above really made me decide quickly to get it checked out. Thanks
