PCV Conversion - Won't Idle

Over the winter I replaced the draft tube on my 51 239L6 with a PCV valve.  Modified the valve cover and connected it to the intake manifold between #1 and #2/3 cylinders.  Got the old girl fired up last night and she ran really good until the choke came off, then it wouldn't idle worth crap.  I know the PCV acts like a vacuum leak, and when I plugged the line on the PCV valve, the idle returned to normal.

What do I need to adjust to get the idle back into place ?

Or the other thing I was thinking, should I route the hose from the PCV valve into the breather instead - not creating the vacuum problem to begin with ??

Thanks much !!!

Sounds like it's leaning out. You likely need to richen up the carb settings.

What did the PCV valve come out of - what application? Everyone is different -orfice size according to engine size ect. You may need a smaller one and yes you most likely will need to readjust the idle mixture.

A PCV valve is one way only, did you connect it on the good way?

If yes, you will have to make a restriction in the fitting (or elswhere in the tube) you screwed in the intake.

I sized it based on an early 70's  250 6 cyl - closest size to my 239 with the style of fittings I had available.  I did find a lot for small 4 cyl's that had the same configuration - I'll try adding a bit of restriction first, then maybe swap for a smaller one.

Thanks

there are two types of pcv besides orfice size one draws through one way the other does not check them by sucking on the valve in the direction of flow

Finally had some time to get back to my little dilema. I've ended up putting a restriction in the hose (threads rod with a hole in it), and have been able to get things running again. The size of the restriction is 3/32". There still seems to be a good vacuum. Is this size still to big, or not big enough ??

Thanks much !!!

It's difficult to tell you the correct size since those engine never has PCV, but if all the the vaccuum accessoiries run OK (wiper, distributor advance) you have found the right restriction size.
