I've got my finger on the trigger to order the 2.5" dual Flowmaster kit for my 396/402.
The car currently has Hooker competition headers and a cheap stock dual exhaust system. ...sure sounds good, but I'm think'n it could sound a whole lot better!
The Flowmaster kit uses Super 40 series mufflers. I've never bought a really nice exhaust system for any car I've previously owned ...so I'm kind'a hoping you guys can provide sum input and advice. I know I don't want a 3" system and it must look stock.
...Did '67 Beaumonts come with rear exit or side exit? I currently have rear.
I have the same system on my 69 as Fred hooked up to full length headers and it sounds great. I am going to pull it all off when the motor is done to put factory exhaust back on but that is the only reason it is coming off.
3" pipes would be too large to clear at the rearend / shock. Mine is really close now and just clears.
'67 did not exit straight out the rear if that is what you are wondering.
The only thing I didn't like about the kit was the two piece tailpipes. It makes the install easy to do in your garage but I don't like the extra clamp. I could have welded it there but I would prefer to have a one piece pipe. I don't know if the '67 kit is the same but if that is an issue you may want to find out.
67 Beaumont tailpipes come out behind the rear tire on both sides is what I recall but I don't have the book in front of me to verify. Flowmasters sound great. Have them on my 96 Caprice with LT1 and they are more noticeable than stock but not crazy loud. Definitely know there is a V8 coming from a block away.
"SD 396" So what your saying is... my current rear exhaust exit is not stock? (see picture)
Flowmaster has a few different muffler options 40, 44, 50, 70 etc. I want the car to be heard...but not obnoxious! ...Deep Rumble, (show off the extremely lumpy cam) Not too worried about how loud it will be in the interior ...that's why I bought a Big Block!
I'm assuming the Super 40 series is the way to go???
It should be out the side between the wheel opening and the bumper. I have been trying to find a picture of Bill's car and had to steal one from another site. I have seen them back further than this as well. It is your car so the choice is all yours.
FYI A friend of mine has a 66 SS and his pipes point staight down at the ground. He said it is deafening in the car when sitting still.
Is your motor fairly stock? Or do you ever intend on putting in a bigger BBC? If you have plans for a bigger engine, then go to the 3" right away... you could always compromise with 3" from the collectors to the mufflers, and 2.5" over the axles to the back ...depending on how much breathing your engine needs, the bigger pipes could net you 2/10ths in a 1/4 mile... I have 3" to the stock location, and dynomax 3" super turbos...

I am going to find out this week if 3" fit my 65. I still have my 2 1/2 tail pipes but the rest is 3" I finally ordered the flow master tail pipe kit on Saturday, should have it today. I talked to another fella that put them on his 67 and they fit so I should be able to make them work.
I like the look of the rear exit. I thought the stock exhaust exit was further back than that SD rag? I have a 20 year old walker exhaust on my car. I have always liked the look of the tail pipes on it. The flowmaster are a little to straight back.
We used them 2 -3 times. nice fit. with hoist install 1.5-2 hours.the 2.5" is a good size cuz mandrel bent. We also have use the 3" stainless magna flow kit much more work(back half, around tank very tight). magna kit if not mistaken is an x pipe instead of cross pipe. 2.5 flow is fine for even a stout motor in my oponion cuz tubes arent crushed as oem. And realy a 375 hp 396 had 1 7/8-2" crush tube so u are get go flow(again just my thoughts)
we also use the headman elite header,for a few reasons. Ceramic coated, heavy flanges, and unlike other headers, these are tight and even for a change(driver side i think usually hangs low and can bottom out) these r nice. they have a cheaper version painted black reg flang.
coated are 500 reg like 200 somewhere around there
...The "Big Boy" mufflers are now installed!!! They sound real BAD ASS!!!
I would HIGHLY recommend the Super 40 series muffler kit (American Thunder Kit) It took about 3.5hrs to install. I had the shop weld all the flanges ...but not at the mufflers. (The kit supplies enough clamps to clamp everything together).
...burned another $40 bucks tonight cruising around town! AWESOME!
