spary the carp out of it with WD-40 from the underside , let it sit so all the crap can run out of it, leave it for a few days then try it. If it works for 15 sec. means the coil is good, just might be gummed up with 40 years of crap...just maybe !

yeah,,if you have a worn out spring issue...might not be worth the hassle.
since you have it stripped down,, have you thought about buying a hobby clock and fabbing to the backside, extend the wires to convenient location with the AA battery were it can be easily changed. I've seen it done.

I tried the spray on 2 non-working clocks, and cleaning the contacts, both came to life and have been working since. My 67 GP owners manual states that a complete 24 hour turn of hour hand using the knob to the right will add 5 minutes, and a complete 24 hour turn to the left will lose 5 minutes off of the clock speed. So in theory if your clock gains a hour a day, 12 complete 360 degree turns of the hour hand will get it back on track. I dont have the manual in front of me, so I may have the directions backwards, but it is a fact. Before I knew this, I was making my clock faster everyday by always rotating the knob to the right to get the correct time!
