Well I've been looking for a "large" pontiac for awhile and I heard some rumors of a 1964 4 door hidden away in a garage, as with most I was hopeing for a Hard top 4 door, however a 4 door sedan (post car) as it where is more than cool as well.

the car is about 3 hours away from where I live but I was able to snap a few pictures of it when I went for a visit. I will be transporting it home over the next few weeks if all goes well.

Welcome. Cool find! When was it last on the road? Looks very original, except the colour ... 283 V-8.

There are people on here that will help you with some front end parts. We will answer your questions no problems.

... Darryl.

here are a few more pics, it was a really crowded area and I'm no photographer so these are the best pics I have until I get it home.

Nice original firewall markings.

Take a picture of your trim tag (it is right above those firewall markings, to the passenger side)

The original colour is the lighter Skyline Blue (code HH). The trunk should be all blue (no black paint).

Nice original spare tire! (there might be some nice vintage aqua floor mats under that tire)

There is a yellow sticker on your trunk lid ... your car could have positraction! (code G 80 on your trim tag). Nice option, if it has it!

What colour is the interior?

I'll be re-doing the brake system, I'm looking at a disc brake conversion for the front atleast, seeing as I will be replacing the master anyways I figure I might as well do it all while I'm in there . . .

The Interior colour is Blue, I'm not sure where the ID plate would be located, and like I said once I get it home in a few weeks I'll be better able to answer all your questions.

The tag is sitting flat right above the "914" written on the fire wall, between the wiper cowl and hood seal. The rear edge of the hood will cover it when closed...........

Just curious to know WHY you would be converting to discs?

The drum brakes on BOTH of my 64's work really well & are REAL SIMPLE to work on.

If you're going racing, discs are a nice upgrade, but for a stock cruiser, they are really not needed.

Really looking forward to seeing the other pics of the car

I would second the opinion on keeping the existing drum brakes if you're just building a cruiser.   The drum brakes are totally fine for anything other than "high speed" police interceptor use.  And as mentioned,.. the brakes are cheap to buy and maintain.   A master cylinder kit for that car is also cheap,.. about $25.00 for the kit (and they're easy to rebuild),.. and about $50.00 for a complete rebuilt master cylinder, if you don't want to take the time to rebuild it yourself.

The choice of staying with a single reservoir master cylinder or changing to a dual resovoir unit is a matter of opinion.  (and you'll get plenty of opinions on both)

The long and short,..on the stock setup;  yes,.. if you blow a brake line and you empty your master cylinder,...and your emergeny break cables are siezed,...... then you've got no brakes. Sounds scary.  But probably 95% of those cars are still running the stock setup and they are reliable on a properly maintained car.  I'm inclined to stay with a properly maintained single (stock) unit.

The brakes do deteriorate from sitting,.  so what I would suggest,.. rebuild all 4 wheel cylinders ($ 5.00 X 4 kits ) replace both front brake hoses ($25.00 X 2) rebuilt the master cylinder ($25.00 kit ) and flush the old brake fluid and top up with fresh ($15.00 for fluid)  New brake shoes all around if it needs,..( $30.00 X 2 front and back).  So for $145.00,.. your brakes will be fine for a very long time.  (maybe even until you decide to sell the car).

The cost of switching to a dual reservoir is not one that I would endorse (just my opinion of course) So I'll let some other memeber toss in their views on this and let them give you a breakdown on a cost for that setup if you're considering it.

Nice to see another '64 enthusiast join the "club".   Good luck,.. and happy cruising!

Part of the FUN of enjoying our OLD Pontiacs is experiencing how they were built and drive in their original state.

If you are adding a dual master & front discs, you might as well put in a few airbags, toss the carb and go with fuel injection & add a computer with electronic ignition.
Wait, maybe we should just get a NEW car, with all that junk already installed & all those SILLY metric bolts!

Well, I have plans of a big block, and I would like to lower the front end, and like I said seeing as I will be replacing the brakes anyways a conversion kit with drop spindles seems like the way to go. I may infact keep the stock setup for the first bit but once things start rollin along I will end up dong the conversion. Also I do enjoy the safety aspect of having two seperate circuits.

Baby steps ...

You might need a new frame, floor/trunk, floor supports, gas tank, etc. etc. before drop spindles, disc brakes, and a big block.

GOOD CALL!

Get it running & DRIVE IT first.

With todays $6.00 a gallon gas prices, you will just LOVE that little 283's fuel economy,if you are actually planning on driving your 64.

A buddy of mine bought a NICE 66 Impala SS with a pretty stock 327 a few years back.

He just couldn't live with the "small" motor.

We stuffed a 427 in there & now he's crying the blues about how expensive it is to drive.

I toss 20 bucks into MY 64 with the TINY 283 in it and can cruise ALL AFTERNOON.

Think about that one.
