Starter issues w/flywheel

Installed the pilot bush & flywheel on the 350 engine. Fits great [13" dia. across the ring gear] put the starter on off the old 305 auto & it's 1 1/2" away from ring gear??? How many diff. "snouts" are there for these set ups. Hoping NAPA can help out on Mon. morning!!!! Any idea on what application starter I should be looking for????  Have no idea what the flywheel came off, set up for 10" clutch which I have

If you are using the 10 1/4 clutch, sounds like you need the 6cyl starter used with the smaller diameter gear. This starter will have one short and one long bolt straight across from each other unlike in the pic Carl has posted.

Yes, diagonal bolts in the nose for the large flywheel or straight across for the small. If you already are set on the big flywheel, time for a 350 starter (older 350 that is, as the LT1's use the small starter.)

Sounds like your useing a diagonol bolt starter for the 14 in. 168 tooth  flywheel on a 12-3/4 153 tooth flywheel. Thats over an inch different.  You would need the straight across bolt starter nose .

Ian, that's exactly what I've got!!!!  Just thinking now that maybe I should look for the larger flywheel??? One way or the other I've got to get something that will mesh up!!!!!

So, does the '66 327 mill use the 6cyl or 8cyl style starter....?

6 cyl unless it had the hd clutch option if my memory is right. Then it would be an 11" flywheel.

OK guys, now I've got a "PROBLEM"  Intalled the Headman" headers"  Left side fits perfect, right side fits "UNTILL" I try & install the starter, it will not slide in far enough, hits the header tube. I've tried leaving the header loose, 1 bolt, 2 bolts. I've ordered a "MINI" high torque starter from NAPA in hopes of getting more clearance. Anyone ever have this problem??????

  Pete

I had the same issue with FlowTech headers on my BB 69. Ordered a high torque mini starter and solved that problem. The only other problem I have is getting the oil filter out past the header on the left side. I use a ratchet strap and a pry bar to move the header over to get the filter out.

If you are using the small starter, which I think you are, the 94-95 LT1 Impala starter is a direct fit and it's quite a bit smaller.

Picture 016.jpgPicture 017.jpgPicture 018.jpgBought the "BULLET" & went w/ the MINI gear reduction starter. NAPA Port Perry had one in stock & Miles,[counter guy & old car guy] loaned it to me Fri aft. everything fits & hot wired the starter & she "turned" over. Took back the "other starter for credit. Hope to "Light" her up next week. Have to take the headers back off & install the manifolds & old single exhaust, as Headman says not to Start fresh engine & break in cam with the headers on as damage will occur to coating, unless you put fans on headers to keep them cool!!1 Then after just run it it up to operating temp & let them cool down???? Check out the R/covers, hoping my car buddy down the street will part with them.
