You will need the puller and a good puller at that. I have the GM Kent Moore puller and still, pulling the wheel off of a '66 Grande column, it was tough going and damaged the first couple of threads........

And, please don't attempt what Carl suggested........ Use a chain, less give and not so stretchy!!!! (lol)

Well, first of all, remove the center horn button, then the nut and 3 phillips screws for the horn pad. Pulling on the actual outside ring of the wheel is tougher than pulling at the center hub of the wheel.

And don't use a hammer and punch on the column shaft as you will mushroon the threads and you will snap the teflon pins in the collapsible shaft.... Find yourself a good puller!

Hammer works fine if you hit the shaft in the right place; had to do it many time. But I prefer the puller.

i needed a cup off the back of a 55 gmc truck steering wheel that had been exposed to the elements. what a ordeal! even stripped the puller. ended up cutting the column to get the cup off the back of the wheel

remove the Steering wheel .. oh no ...
At my 65 Parisienne it was no problem..easy!! Used a puller and it makes knock and it was removed ..

At my 65 Bonneville it was a longer story .. i turned at the puller .. and turned ..and turned ... and turned .. nothing happend .. all was stright ...but i turned and turned
finally i used a hammer .. and an special "dorn" we called in german . but nothing happends!!

Afetr a few more turns the shaft starts to bend and in this moment it makes knock (i used an hot air gun, too)
The wheel was emoved, the shaft bended. ****
I cut a new thread .. it works now but for sure i was looking around for an used steering column .. finally i found exactly the same steering column at franks pontiac parts palm springs...  now it`S in my car.. looks great and the horn is working too!!

It was an expensive experience!!

I usually use hammer.
I have the nut backed off even with the top of shaft,
while sitting in the seat with knees on back of steering wheel pushing towards me
2 hammers, one against the nut and shaft and hitting with other one.
This works 99% of the time.

That's right,if without a puller I have just loosened the nut to the top of the shaft as not to damage the threads and gave it a few good whacks while pulling on the wheel at the same time. Then again, pullers are cheap/inexpensive compared to damaging threads on a colunm.

I'd stick with using a puller to remove the steering wheel, as there are other internals on the column that can be damaged by banging on the center shaft.

I remember salvaging the steering column out of a car at a junkyard years ago. (It really was a junkyard)

We broke the back windshield out, wrapped a chain around the wheel and gave it a good yank with the old pickup.

Popped off very nicely and almost ended wearing the wheel.

Wouldnt recommend that technique though for anything you care about, including your skull!
