Today I found my favorite garage ever, 40 years of collecting GARAGE has burnt down. REBUILT and now an estate sale.

I received a phone call this afternoon from my old friend who I had taken on this little road trip and he informed me that he was talking to the owner of the garage today and it burned down with everything inside it.  I couldn't believe it.  I have seen a few pretty cool garages but none of them held a light comparted to this one.  Sounds like he was doing some grinding and some sparks got into some upholstery and away she went.  I will find out more details tonight as I visit my old buddy but very shocked to say the least.  I don't know how you could ever get fair compensation on an insurance claim.  Some of you might remember the garage.

I took my old friend to a swap meet just out of Kamloops today in a small place called Chase.  Good swap meet on a beautiful day and plans were to meet up with a guy that lived a few minutes away that my old friend had run into previously when selling some 409 stuff.  He is a collector of almost anything auto related and was such a gracious host for us for a couple hours this afternoon.  He has only been there for about 10 years so some of the guys from the coast may have seen his display down there previously.  Here are a few pictures.  The Chevvy is just about finished with a 348 in it.  The engine on the stand is a 409 which is almost ready for assembly for his 55 GMC pickup which now has a 454.   He has a real soft spot for the 348s and the 409s.  My friend and the owner are in the first picture and are 74 and 71 so lots of stories to be told.  You could eat off that garage floor or anyplace in it.  Definetely one of the highlights of my car show travels.  I was impressed.May long weekend 2011 068.jpg

Absolutely love the shop! My dream shop!

There's a guy on PEI with a shop like that (on a lesser scale) that I bought some parts off of. He buys out old garages, or goes to garage auctions. I sold him some automobilia also. Too bad he sold his '64 Parisienne and bought a Fairlaneno

To be honest it was almost overwhelming. There was just so much neat stuff in every square foot that the pictures don't do it justice. The owner just made the experience even that much better. When we talked to him earlier in the day at the swap meet we said we didn't want to impose on him by stopping in and he made it real clear that he would be very disappointed if we didn't make the time to stop by. I think everyone ended up happy.

What a wonderful experience. You know how it is with car guys, they can swap stories until the sun goes down and twilight appears on the horizon (based on my own conduct). Your friend remembers the good old days and has done his best to impart that feeling into his daily life. The fact that he is so willing to share with other enthusiasts is especially great. W-motors, cool!

I knew a guy that was into pre-war Packards but also restored a Chrysler Town & Country convertible, a Nash Metropolitan and even a 1930s Bantam roadster. I'd drop in on him and he was always willing to explain what he was doing. He died prematurely of cancer in the mid 1990s (be careful with automotive chemicals and asbestos components!)

Made me think back a few days when Carl mentioned he stopped welding early in the evening so he could double check later for anything.

It is easy to say that they were only material things and that we cant take them with us, however where else could you relive such a great scene? When I look at the pictures it takes me back. I can actually smell the grease pit and remember the service stations that were in town when I was growing up. Such a devastating loss for the owner, as I am pretty sure it was his automotive Valhalla. I am glad that you were originally allowed access to his treasures and were generous enough to share with us.

Remember years ago when Reggie Jackson had that devastating fire? The world lost quite a few automotive treasures. Low mile 1970 LT-1 Corvette, 1957 Fuel Injected Bel Air. Low mile LS-6 Chevelles. L-78 Nova SS. 1966 Nova SS L-79. There were a lot more, probably 409 cars etc. Unbelievably, Reggies storage & viewing place caught fire during the installation of a sprinkler system, how ironic is that?

I have a little cove where I keep a collection of antique outboards in my basement. The only fuel tanks inside are the ones that havent been fuelled in many years and have been boiled out. All the rest are away from my house in a shed that would not bring about the devastation that one experiences at the loss of the treasures that your friend suffered with his secret grotto. When I look at it I realize the only thing missing from the scene is my fire extinguisher. I have fixed that!
