That's a tough break on a beautiful shop. It was a cool looking place.
As long as he's alive to tell about it...........;well that's all that matters in the end.

Too bad about that garage. Every man's dream garage. It looked more like a museum. Alot of money tied up in automotive antique/collectibles. Hopefully he made a list and took pictures for insurance purposes. One never really thinks of doing that.

Little place called Sorrento, B.C.  Not too far from Kamloops or Salmon Arm.

That is a shame.

Yes, double and triple check your work area for an hour or two after grinding and welding. I was grinding again tonight. Stopped over an hour ago, same reason again. It sucks but I find other projects to finish up the night.

This morning I was mad at myself. I put the 10 amp battery charger on our son's car in our detached shed, and I forgot it on overnight. I NEVER charge a battery overnight and if at all possible, charge them outside on the ground away from buildings. My former boss lost his GM dealership 40 years ago when he left a charger on.

Interesting.  Never ever have thought about it as it seems any time I charge a battery it is on overnight in the garage.  Something to think about.

We had a close call at work only a month or so ago. My boss forgot the charger on a battery overnight. In the morning the whole place reeked, we thought it was sewer, real powerful. The battery that stayed charging over night was burning hot, likely close to melting. I'd say we lucked out on that one.

Yes, hopefully he or someone else has some more pictures. Also, an inventory list would be good. I hope he has current contents insurance!

Yes, very, very sad.

That's just terrible. I'm really sorry to hear about that.

This is the kind of thing that could happen to anybody. I can just imagine the scene, by the time he noticed the fire it was already too late.

 Ever try one of these?

http://batterytender.com/automotive.html

We use these at work and they're great.  Just hook 'em up and forget about them.

The disadvantage is that the charge rate is very slow, so you would have to leave it on charge overnight. Also, you can't jump start with it or anything, but it is all computer controlled, low-amperage charging and it shuts off automatically when it's finished.

.........The owner of the place is Bob Sebastian, a good friend of mine. He called me the other day to tell me what happened, I was totally shocked. He is lucky to be alive himself, the firefighters don't know how he managed to get out alive. The 58 Impala is the car I found for him and have been helping him with details and a few parts over the long restoration. He was going to finally drive it for the first time very soon here, but sadly the car is gone now. He had a 600 oil can collection in the there and that fueled the fire unreal, they were exploding and the smoke was unreal. The signs and all the stuff were a awesome collection. He had his son inlaws 56 chev up on the hoist , was going to patch a small hole on the rear floor. He ground the spot, but a spark went into the back seat. He didn't know this and when he smelt something he moved from under the car and seen the interior on fire. The windows blew out of the car and fire went up top, he tried but couldn't get the car down . He had 2 fire extinguishers sitting right there and emptyied them and it sorta put the car flames out, but the roof was already lit and he ran to the house to call 911 . He then went back in the shop to try save something but the smoke was so bad he got lost. His wife yelled for him and he told her keep talking so he could find his way back to the doorway. He managed to get out ok. The fire truck was there in 10 minutes, but saved nothing. They don't know how Bob survived the smoke, they said it takes only a few seconds to kill a guy the way it was burning with all that oil. 2 firefighters ended up in the hospital also. He had a unbelievable collection of auto memorbilia . He plans to rebuild a even nicer shop with the old service garage theme , but with running water this time and sprinklers. He would like another 58 Impala but is too old to do a long restoration again, so if anyone knows of a decent driver not overpriced then let me know. Bob is a terrific guy and didn't deserve such bad luck. Many car clubs pulled up to his place and enjoyed seeing all that he had there. He had storage insurance on the 58 and on the building, but the 56 and all the memorbillia was no insurance.....huge loss. But material things can be replaced, human life can not and I'm just glad my friend got out of there alive.

That's horrible... so sad.  At least he got out of there alive, that's the main thing.  Stuff can be replaced, but a life can't.

I'll keep my eyes on the ads for another '58...

So I am bringing up an old thread as the story continues. This thread started about 10 years ago when we were first able to tour his garage. Then it all burnt down. Fast forward 10 years and I see an estate auction happening this weekend at a similar location. Put 2 and 2 together and thought it must be his as this small town couldn't have 2 avid collectors like this. So I took the old Beaumont on a 4 hour road trip today to view and it was his rebuilt garage and he did a lot of collecting after with his insurance money. Sounds like he passed away in 2016 so had about 4 years to collect again and his wife just passed away last year. Auction itself is all online tomorrow so will be interesting to see how his signs and collectibles go. That 58 in the original pictures is what caused the fire. He was doing some grinding and the headliner caught on fire. He thought he had it out but it flared up later and took everything out.

Sad news Jerel. looked like a really neat place. Just as others have mentioned, I always go out later and check to makes sure

nothing is smouldering or on fire. Had my Compressor electric motor burn up a few years back, Luckily I was in the shop at the

time, Was doing some grinding with a die grinder, was on the ground and did not see the smoke till I stopped and looked around. WTF

Compressor motor had severe melt down. Got away with a New motor luckily. Now I am anal about making sure it is turned off when not needed.

More similar sad news out of Naniamo a few days ago, Retired Fireman was bring back a Chevelle, in Memory of his friend who

died of cancer. His daughter heard something outside and looked out the window, guys shop was on fire. Yelled at her Dad, The dad caught a guy

on his deck, said he could not break in so he lit it on fire, all lost in fire. Guy was arrested and released.

Yeah that is a tough one. Another angle thrown at it as there is no blame on yourself because you couldnt have done anything about it. It would have taken a fluke to be out there and catch the situation in time. Im just going to check now online and see how the prices are looking.
