67 Control Arms, thinking of going tubular....


Had the 67 up on a lift at a friends place (great friend to have!) to troubleshoot some front end clunking. Didn't take long to find out that my lower control arm bushings are pretty much gone, and the whole control arm is slopping around at the joint.  The holes have ovalized and now they lower arms are junk. I am thinking while I am at it should I spend a little more $$$ and update the front end with some tubular control arms? I am looking at the CPP "Totally Tubular" set up which is a kit with all 4 control arms or going for the Global West set up which is a bit more expensive but has the benefit of Del-A-Lum greasable bushings. Anyone have any experience with either of these two products?

I have the CPP ones. There's lots more out there and theres some that claim to correct the suspention geometry. But I had the same problem as you, my old ones were rotten and new stamp steal ones were just about as expencive as the cpp ones. CPP's are the cheapest ones i found.

Those along with the massive hotchkis anti-sway bar i put on made a HUGE diffrence in how my car drives. I was very happy with them...fit in no problem and have a nice finish.[I got them in black]

Look at the team Chevelles pro-touring section for a lot more suspention upgrade info.

CPP has a sale on the whole kit. I heard from a local speed shop they are buying imports thru Mopac in Calgary for 275 $ for all 4 and these are working out great

I am now thinking of spending the $$$$ and going for a whole kit from SC&C.

Never heard a bad thing about sc&c If you can afford it better to use the best stuff there is. Dont think youll be disapointed with it.

Yeah, I am just trying to decide what is the best thing to do long term, It would be nice to scratch the suspension off the to do list.  Just sold my downhill racing mountain bike so I think I'll splurge and go for the touring kit from SC&C. I'll post my finding once I get it all installed.  Thanks for your input Paul, and I freaken love your car! What have you done to that 454 to get 500HP?

Just ordered the stage II touring kit plus the SPC lower tubular control arms and upgraded to the Koni adjustable shocks.....don't tell my girlfriend........

Well the kit is nearly installed, a few hiccups along the way but that's just the nature of the beast. I assembled the front end and put the weight on the car for the first time and to my shock the car dropped nearly 3" in the front. My cross-member and oil pan was about 2.5" of the ground. I took the springs out again and put in all the available spacers that came with the kit that according to the instruction should be raising the stock height by 1". Nope she was still slammed. I checked with Mark and it appears that SPC sent me the wrong springs, bah! So I cleaned up my old ones and put them in. It's going to be a week or two before I can get the right ones sent out. Other than the tie rod clamps hitting the new bump stops on the LCAs and having to grind a little here and a little there most of the kit went in without a hitch. I did have to cut off my old hooker headders in able to get the old UCAs off and install the new ones, but I hated them anyway, terrible fit and installed by a gorilla with a ball peen hammer. So I just picked up a new set of Hedman Elites and will be putting them in tomorrow. I also found out that I have a 68 rear end since it is 1" longer than what a 67 should be. As a consequence of this I have had to downsize to 15x7 wheels with some BFG Radial T/A's 255/60's. I had 295's back there originally but since the back end was going to drop around 3" even my 8" wheels would be coming into close contact with my fender well. So I think by the end of the day tomorrow it should be road worthy, and in a few weeks I will be able to put in the proper springs and press in the bottom howe ball joints.
I will post some pics and some feedback once I have it all in.

Too bad about the springs, taking these front ends apart isnt much fun. Hope the rest goes together with out a hitch.

So the proper SPC front springs are here now, but they never attached the invoice saying they is no cost due to them sending out the wrong springs the first time. So now customs at the airport wont let me have them. Man I am hoping I can get some sort of money back on the kit because by them sending out the wrong springs is costing me an extra 2.5+ hrs from having to take these stupid things in an out every time. Plus I have to pay for the shipping to get them here. I can usually do most stuff on my own but there is a mechanic that I know who has let me bring the car in to use the lift and he is helping me install this stuff properly so I'm paying him for his time. Mark is pretty approachable so I'll see if there is something we can work out.
On a side note I highly recommend the Hedman Elite series Headders. They fit really well, only had to shave a little metal off of my passenger LCA bracket on the frame. Great access to oil filter, lots of clearance for the starter, no pipes touching the steering linkage, and no down pipes lower than my crossmember. I did find out why this thing has been running a little rough lately, my #3 spark plug was totally oil fouled, same with the #2, most of them were not the greatest but these two were terrible. I hope my rings are good, going to do a seafoam treatment to the oil and change it out, couldn't hurt.
Can't wait until this is all in so I can put up some pics!

I will be sure to put up all of the install photos that I have taken to show the stumbling points that I had. As far as brakes go, I am just running front discs from a 70 chevelle, what I want to put on are these, but I need to save some more $$$$

So, still working on getting the ride height set. I have resorted to using my stock springs with all the spacers available in the SPC ride height adjustment kit. There was some confusion that I have may received the wrong front springs but that turned out to be untrue. I needed to get the car on the road so I couldn't wait for the upper aluminum helical spring spacer which is what I need to have the car at a safe ride height. Be forewarned if you have a big block car you will need all the spacers that you can install to prevent your car from being 3" off the ground at the trans cross-member. The SPC lower LCA's have a very deep spring pocket, the SPC springs are only 14.5" tall, the Howe Ball joints drop your spindles another 1" it all adds up to around 3" of front end drop, at least it did for me. I would have had the car on the road yesterday but in the process of installing the new headers I damaged my front drivers side brake line off of the line lock proportioning valve and lost brake pressure during my test run. Even though my alignment was pretty far off I experienced huge improvements of handling and the overall feel of the car, even with such a short test drive. I can't wait to get this thing all done and back on the road. I am pretty happy with the overall stance of the car, slight drop in the front but the rear looks low and sleek. I will post some pics soon. The customer service from both Mark and Todd from SC&C and SPC has been hands down the best I've ever had. Great guys that know their products inside and out.
