If it is an original auto, 'glide it is... And the good 'glide that will crank the engine if you want or had to push/tow to get it to start!!

O.k., so the whine is normal then, I was concerned I was in for a tranny rebuild. seems to slip a little bit going into 2nd is that normal for these old trannys?

Not really.

You may have a vaccum leak or the shift modulator may be bad.(simple to replace)

I would pull the pan and see what the oil looks like and the deposits on the pan itself

Now I'm fascinated. To effect a tow start should the car be in D or L and what speed is required? A further question - when in D and decelerating the trans feels like a much later "lock up" trans giving some engine braking - is this my imagination?

As I recall, all that info is covered in your owners manual (glove box book)

I towed mine to about 30 mph to "jump" it
also if the modulator is shot it will down shift with a bang when you slow down
same with vacumn leak, i had a small crack in the metal line from carb to modulator
that would cause it to downshift that way till it got warm then it would shift fine.
replaced the line and everything worked great.

That's why they say " Slip & Slide with Power Glide"  Hope your not waiting for 3rd. gear "cause you'll have a LONG wait, 2 spd trans. low & drive only, these old tranny's were dependable, take a lot of abuse & sometimes good for 50mph in low gear depending on rear gears!!!!!

Wow,. this is really interesting.  You mean that you can actually pull start the engine that has a 2 speed automatic?  I wasn't aware that there was any automatic that this worked.  (Not that I doubt your info, .)  Have you tried this?  One wonders though ,.. if you have someone to pull start your vehicle,... why you wouldn't just hop in the other car,... go for a beer and come back later with booster cables biggrin

I pushed mine (quite a few yrs ago) when my batt was dead, just put it in gear and ignition on fired over when i hit around 30 mph
cant do it any more cause most cars dont have bumpers that you can push with !!

I learned this like 40? years ago.

My dad bought a 64 Parisienne 4dr Ht new & as I recall we were going down the hill into Princenton on the way to camping in Penticton & he shut ithe car off.

It started right up again & for years after I figured ALL slush boxes were the same.
NOT SO!

I had the glide rebuilt in the 4 dood 65 parisienne (not to bad, but had it out with motor after it dropped a vaule). It is an alum 'glide and has a rear pump to pump the fluid.

Sorry guys, in order to tow start should we be selecting D or L? Secondly, should that be done before moving off or at 30mph? Of course I hope I never have to....................

Wow! That is totally wild.  I thought I knew everything about these old bombs.  Not that I'll be pull starting a 2 speed anytime soon.  I still like the old slush box.  The typical whine,.,. they are virtually indestructible.  My old 64 would shift into 2nd at around 60 MPH.  It's just a nice cruising trani!
Nailhead wrote:

these trany's with the rear pump allows you to tow the car at any speed and it won't hurt it cause the rear pump is turn by the drive shaft thus making oil pressure thus why it will turn the engine over at speeds of 30 mph or more when put into gear.

...our 'Glide's due for a rebuild but last summer for the first time the engine would rev up a bit in high like the tranny was popping out of gear. You know the way auto's do if they're low on fluid. But we added a quart and it still does it. Is it time to pull it or might there be a cheaper fix? I know engines pretty well but I'm not an expert on auto trannies...

If it's flaring like that it's definately due. Does the oil smell burnt and have a brown tinge to it? If so it's time.

i remember when i towed my 63 acadian out of the farm i never really looked at the shifter. the front wheels were seized so we just hooked a tow strap on it and dragged it out of the junipers , then jacked it up and put it on a tow dolly. when we pulled into the village after 2 miles of gravel and 3 miles of pavement, there was smoke billowing out from the engine compartment. oil had puked out and was over everything. thats when my dad told me the slush slides could turn the engine

You should check/change the modulator valve and also check the vacuum line and make sure its OK. I bet that is your shifting problem. Powerglide pumps always whine. They can also be push started in drive above 30 mph.

if a glide gets to the point of slipping in drive gear you might start to get clutch bits in the oil when you pull the pan, a metalic sheen to the oil on the dipstick is also a indicator as to its well being.
