i remember when i towed my 63 acadian out of the farm i never really looked at the shifter. the front wheels were seized so we just hooked a tow strap on it and dragged it out of the junipers , then jacked it up and put it on a tow dolly. when we pulled into the village after 2 miles of gravel and 3 miles of pavement, there was smoke billowing out from the engine compartment. oil had puked out and was over everything. thats when my dad told me the slush slides could turn the engine

I bought a wreck years ago at the insurance auction in Winnipeg. Pulled it home with a tow rope behind my 427 GP. It pulled pretty hard it seemed. Got it home, tried to start the 283 and it squeaked when it cranked. Winter time, yet the engine was nice and warm but had never run..... Yup, ruined it because the shift linkage was bent in the accident and we had towed it home in gear....

Lots of people, still drive cars, with no power steering, and no power brakes...   and probably some still drive 3 speed on the columns to work

Yeah, Yeah, that might be me but at least I drive it.  I put on more miles in a summer than you do with those big blocks in 5 years.  It's about drive and enjoy and I do, not sit and talk about.  That sounds a little too harsh doesn't it.

I must be a minority on this subject, but I can't stand driving a PowerGlide car! 2 speed is a great way to hobble an engine. They make the nastiest SBC seem gutless, but behind a inline 6 or 283 they are a serious handicap vs. a TH350/400 or even better a standard trans.

I did the brakes to power and front disk (mostly to get rid of single Master Cyl)

and changed to power steering because it was only $100 more then replacing my original column.

Now the wife can drive it ..

Still have not figured out if that was a good idea..

If you are going to change it, use a 700R4 overdrive unit. better mileage and performance. less wear on the engine.
