As far as I know the original lock buttons are colour coded plastic but I have been wrong before......  http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/pts/2532234402.html

You are correct.   Never metal on beaumonts or chevys.   I have seen some higher end cars(buick, olds, caddy, etc.)  with those metal ones.  Also the top is a wider diameter indicating it is also for a fullsize car.

Dunno about Beaumonts, but my 1966 Chevelle which I bought new had black plastic (to match black interior).

The guy says he took them off a Beaumont, maybe some prior owner 'upgraded' to the chrome ones?
