'57 Gas tank/filler tube question

So, I purchased a repop tank for a '57 Chev, installed it and the (Pontiac) filler tube. Should the filler tube not come up into the filler door area? It seems terribly low. Also, is there no 'pocket' or something behind the door itself? My car was in pieces when we started, so I have no reference point. Thanks folks.

there is no filler just the tube and it sits down about 2 inches.
