Hi, I installed ignitor kit last nite in my 71 Lemans Sport with a Pontiac 400. I attached black wire to neg on coil and the red wire to + on the coil. Engine did not try to fire at all. I have not checked timing after install. Before install, it was 12 BTDC. Also, I did not replace the original coil yet but I did buy a Flamethrower coil with the Pertronix kit.
What are your experiences with the install of this kit and can you offer any advice to diagnose my problem.
I've never installed a Pertronix, but I know they require 12 volts to run. Your 71 likely has a resistive wire that feeds power to the + side of the coil, but it's not 12 volts. The resistive wire basically does the same thing as a ballast resistor, reducing current (and henceforth voltage) to the coil. Check to see what the instructions say on how it is to be wired.
Yes, you are correct. It requires 12 volts when ignition is on. Find a power source that switches on/off with the key at the fuse block and run a 12gauge stranded wire to the red lead of the pertronix and cap off the old positive wire." you need switched power or your engine won't turn off"

I rechecked everything including the coil and jumpered the + wire to the battery and it started. Now I just have to find the switched power source on the fuse box and I will be good to go! Thanks for your help! Regards, Pete
