1974 Chevy Bel Air. 23,000 original miles. Silver. V8 305. 2 door hard top. Second owner. Has been well maintained, but has not been driven for a few years.
It does look nice. I wonder why so cheap, though it has been sitting for a couple of years according to the ad. Still, if it's as good as it looks in the pics...
Do you really think it is Cheap? I think it is priced well to sell. I can't see that car exceeding $5,000 in super mint condition. It is a bread and butter car. Just my opinion.
I wonder if the Cobourgers on this site know the car?
Not a real cheap car ... being sold "as is".

I dunno, under $2500 for a 23,000 mile 2 door hardtop that looks to have a clean body?
Normally I'd expect to see a rusty beater for that price. I mean didn't the '71 Bel Air (rarer and "minter" I realize) on here recently go for around $10K... similar car, low mileage, etc.
Maybe I'm out of step, but usually I see project cars going for that money.
However, as pointed out it is being sold "as is", so maybe there's more bad stuff than meets the eye...
Original factory paint, excellent conditon interior and exterior. Well all I can say is 7 years ago I went to the bank machine and got $2,800 and paid the guy for my car as you see in my avatar, been driving it ever since. Would you call my car cheap, did I pay what it was worth or did I get hosed ?

From what I've seen in my neck of the woods I'd say you got a great deal. Of course I realize you've done stuff to it along the way and I haven't seen your car in person...
I still haven't seen many examples of '73 Lemans'es (?) as nice as your car for what you paid for it (and I've been looking). Around here I'd expect to see it advertised for $5000 - $7000. I know a '73 Luxury Lemans was bought around here by one of our board members and it had been advertised for considerably more than that.
...Hey, I'm all for prices going down, but in NS I'm not seeing a lot of that yet.

And that's why i'm going to keep looking for a low cost car, it can be done!

Agreed! Maybe Ray will sell me his Lemans for $2800...
I spent time perusing kijiji in the last few days and there are a few deals out there. A coupla 60's Ponchos, a 65 convert. for $3000, a 62 Parisienne for less than $3000. There are way more old cars than people looking to buy right now, and a few sellers are waking up and realize they are going to be sitting for another year unless the price drops!
The car was up on the Auto Trader site early this spring for about $3000. It is an unusual car as Bel Air's were only produced in Canada at this time, not produced or sold in the US. The car has been sitting at the end of the seller's driveway for a couple of years as the ad states. Likely worth a look see if you are interested but don't expect to hop in and drive it home.
It seems to be the other way around in the latest issue of Old Auto's. People are asking crazy high prices for cars I wouldn't call very desirable.
Your right Todd. For the most part sellers have their head in the clouds and actually believe the appraisal they got done a few years ago means that their car is worth that.
I always suggest that they ask the appraiser if they want to buy it or even if they know someone that will give 50% of the written up "value"
I did appraisals for the car dealer i worked for a few years ago, mostly for MTO tax purposes, so i've seen both sides of the coin.
Just found the ad that I printed out in the spring for this car. Sick eh! Was asking $5,000 for it then and the ad stated 305 engine at that time as well.

You got hosed It would have been worth double that if it was a big block..

These prices seem quite reasonable to me - but then again I'm a sucker for these cars. My third car was a 72 Impala 4 dr ht - loved it but had to sell it at the time because I didn't make enough money to keep fuel in it.
We had a 74 Biscayne. In 1974 emission-legal state of tune the base 350 2-barrel delivered 9 mpg city and about 13 mpg highway (15 under ideal conditions). If you bump the timing and richen the carb slightly you could do much better.
A friend's father owned a 73 Biscayne with a 454 & 3.42 gearing. It basically got 10 mpg all the time - city, highway, towing a house trailer...
The base 1974 engine was a 350 2-barrel, but in Canada only you could also get a 350 4-barrel with dual exhausts. There was a 400 2-barrel small block that would carry little 400 numerals on the front fender below the nameplate. The 454 also displayed numerals. The Caprice Classic had the 400 standard without numerals, but the 454 Caprice Classic carried numerals on the wide bodyside trim.

I love the early 70s full size Chevys. My third car was a 72 Impala 4 dr ht, 350 2bbl. Loved the car but with the job I had at the time I couldn't afford to put gas in it. So regrettably I sold it. I also had a 74 Impala 4 dr ht with 35k miles on the 400 SB. Low HP rating but it had plenty of torque in the few times I drove it before parting it. I still have the engine and it still has 35K miles.
My brother currently has a 73 Biscayne 4 dr sedan, 350, 18K orig miles, no winters. It's a time capsule, still looks and smells like a new 1973 car. I also have a 454 that came out of a 73 Biscayne cop car. Could be a good match - but honestly this Biscayne is too good to mess with.
