1976 saw the introdcution of the Dura built 140 so the oil burning issues had been addressed. It sure would be hard to resist putting a small block in that though.

No resistance here at all, that "crys out" for a "re power" either small block or big block with a tunnel ram & 2 fours poking out of the hood,[ Sorry, got carried away]

My Mom had a '73 hatchback, she had it from '77-'84. I don't recall my Dad ever putting a dime into that car. It was alway's reliable, I guess my parent's lucked out. My Uncle had a '71 Vega that he bought in '72 and from what he told me it was alway's in the shop. He said it alway's had electrcal problem's and in the first year he owned it GM replaced the front fender's but he had to pay to get them painted. Because I learned to drive on that '73 Astre I would like to find one, if for no reason other reason than nostalgia.
I remember back in '76, a VW dealer in Peterborough had a '75 Astre on the lot for $150..... Or, should I say what was left of one. It was totally rusted out, the front fenders were about to fall off. But two friends and I, drove to Calgary in a 76 Vega... No problems at all.

The 1976 orange is the same as Hugger Orange and Carousel Red.
The Dura-built 2300 added cast iron liners to the bores rather than high silicon aluminum that cant be bored or refinished (not in the feild anyway). They also added hydraulic valve lifters, coolant recovery tank and various other durability features.
As nice as a small block would be, Im thinking a small aluminum Olds V8 from the early sixties would be cool and would not upset the weight balance.
Prior to 75 they were known for rust. You were doing well if you made it 4 years without rust-through, some only made it 2 years.

I used to own a '73 Vega Hatchback ... ran the crap out of it ... I wouldn't pay 3,500.00 for this car.

I'm not really slamming the car (even though I like the hatchback model better), just the price. $2,000.00 over what I would pay for it ...
... and by the time you would sink your time and money into dropping a V-8, rearend, suspension, and other components to make it behave right, then what have you got? A fun car, yes, but not worth the time or money in my opinion.
When I had my Vega, I was a young irresponsible punk that would have ran the crap out of a moped!

Sorry D, I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth. While it's great to see any car in such great original condition, I agree completely that this one is just not a favorite model of mine, and even less for the price.

I owned a cream coloured 1976 Astre coupe from '76 to '83 and it was a great little car. Wish I had the space in my garage, but can't afford the price or the room to keep it. A real shame to pass on this.
had a 73 in 84 it had only 32 k miles on it and it burned oil.was a nice car though red/black/hatch.Had rust by windshield frame.Came with oil can pour attachment. They replaced the viva/firenza?Liked my old monza though, had rust also but had 262/4 speed.
