I have a February, 1970 Oshawa-built Ram Air III GTO. My question is, what is the correct paint color / combo for the underside of the body? I realize some just paint everything semi gloss black, but I have also read that the underside should be red primer with the drive shaft tunnel and wheel wells undercoated, and body color overspray on the sides. I know also that some just paint the same color as the body. But, can someone tell me what would have been correct for this car coming out of the Oshawa plant?
I am confident this question has been asked ( and answered ) before, but I was unable to find it.
I can't answer your specific question but wanted to point out as you already seem to know that what was done at at other plants is not necessarily how Oshawa built them. .
Wow ...I have been told elsewhere that 1970 Oshawa-built cars had semi black underbody...I appreciate your input...just want this one to be correct
I don t recall seeing annything black under in70 I seen an oshawa 70 orbit orange judge orig paint body color under and many 70 chevelles that way but that's not to say it wasnn t different at different times. You should actually be able to tell once the body is up unless its been previously sandblasted. Check seams pinch welds etc ...
My 69 Beaumont has a black floor. Not painted other than red overspray on the floor ribs. The black is the original primer. The only place that had black paint after the car was painted was the firewall and the cowl.
Bill I have owned three Oshawa Judges and all of them have been matte black underside.. Never have I seen the red primer on one yet.. When I did the resto on my Orbit Orange Judge I presently own I did not do anything to the underside as it was in awesome shape and I did a frame off restoration .. The wheel wells were undercoated really thick and so was the floorboards and tunnel...
