Hood release

Since I don't know anyone else with a 66 to ask, I'll ask you guys! Ive been wondering for awhile, but it keeps slipping my mind, so before i forget....My hood is released through a small cut-out in the underside of the front bumper, the lever is almost sitting inside the bumper, and isnt the easiest thing to release, and on occasion has actually sprung inside the bumper needing a screwdriver to pry it out! Is this original or a modification someone made to keep people from opening the hood! I'll send a pic when I can!! Thanks!!

Sounds like something is off, the hook should be protruding by at least an inch past the opening, easy enough to comfortably grab with the index and the thumb of the hand. D.
