a month or so I spotted this 70 Strato Chief in a neighboring area. I tried to follow it, and while it was leaving a healthy cloud of blue smoke behind, some how I lost him.
A week or so ago while on one of my regular routes, I spotted in an alley. I peeked through the windows, and it's a real plain-jane 4 door, with an AM radio as about the only option. It's a 350, with a 12 bolt rear end. I'm thinking this was your bare bones 70 available at your Canadian Pontiac / Buick dealers. A few years ago stripperSS posted some photo's of a 70 Strato Chief police car (with a 454) but this is the small block equivalent.
It's in rough shape, and by looking through the windows about the only thing in nice shape was the cluster surround. - but, someone seems to be driving it as it's moved a couple times since I spotted it's home.
I hope they at least oil sprayed the heck out of it before the salt. It seems a shame to waste the car because of failure to take a few precautions.
I remember an absolutely showroom low miles 1970 Impala convertible, original Cortez Silver paint, original 9:1 compression 400 small block, mint top, chrome, trim, interior get commandeered by the son after the mother died in 1983. It was covered in salt all winter and got washed in the spring when it rained. Within 2 years there were holes and rust streaks. I think the car was scrapped in 1989. Yet there is a guy in New Jersey that bought his 1970 Chevelle new in 1970 and has something like 750,000 miles on it, and until recently driven year round. It is still solid and looks pretty good. You just have to be attentive and pro-active.
Hey seventy2plus2, does that car have a Powerglide, TH350 or a 3-speed manual behind a 350 2-barrel? I wonder if it has standard steering & brakes (remember those terms?)

It's a 3 speed auto, but I didn't check underneath to see if it was a turbo 350 or 400. It's drum brakes (not sure if they're power) and can't tell re the steering. The car is pretty rough, with some big rust holes and every panel is banged in.
The house it's parked behind is only a few blocks from our first Calgary house that we bought in 1971.
I'm quite curious if power brakes, whether it's a 2 bbl or 4 bbl, turbo 350 or turbo 400. As I said above it's got a 12 bolt.
If a 4bbl would that make it an L48 300 HP engine.
I stopped by on my way home. Turbo 400 and MANUAL steering (well the best I could tell, but I couldn't see a pump and it felt like a single belt crank pulley). Still don't know about the brakes and carb. This thing really has my curiousity up.
I know how you feel about being curious. I'm really curious about the story behind this 2+2 that's been sitting behind a townhouse in London for years. Still has the early 1973 plates on it.
We've knocked on the door, left a note. No replies..
The Strato Chief has current plates on it, and I saw it driving a couple months ago (but was leaving a trail of blue smoke). Our snow has pretty much melted now, so I'll have to do a bit more investigation.
I did more research today. 350 2bbl, manual steering, manual brakes. As stated before, Turbo 400 with 12 bolt. I'd say the only options on this car are the AM radio, 350 2V and Turbo 400. (presuming the base engine was a 250 6 cyl)
Theres a 67 F&*RD Fairlane wagon running around town, saw it in the summer but he's still driving it when we had snow here last week, also a 64 Strato Chief 4 dr. that has been used yr. round for as long as I've been here [1972] Found out it was bought new by his father, & its his "daily driver" Well oiled, & body is still in decent shape

65Camino drives his 65 El Camino year round. It's a truck, goes to Home Depot for wood, Rona for garden supplies, even delivers a big block to me. Today it was packed with a parts washer, two floor jacks and 4 axle stands. We had a posi rear end removal at another location.
Oh ya I had the LeMans out today, was really nice.

I talked to the owner today and he showed me the car. Engine compartment is oily, but certainly not rusted. 350 2V, turbo 400, manual steering, manual brakes, 12 bolt, AM radio. Everything, including the jack is there.
Apparently it sat in the back yard for almost 20 years before he towed it out and fired it up. Amazing, as I drive down that street almost every day, and have for 40 years, and I'd never seen the car before (house sits on a corner, so back yard is partly visible)
It's really only a parts car, and the only good items are the inner fenders, instrument cluster surround, heater controls, turbo 400, 12 bolt diff, and jack. I kind of mentioned that if he ever decides to scrap the car to call me. He knows it's only worth a couple hundred bucks.
