239 CAMSHAFT INSTALL ISSUES

Just got the machined block back from the shop (after many months of threatening phone messages to get it done) and I'm starting the assembly. The shop installed the new valves and guides. I asked how I would then get the lifters and cam back in and he replied "from the bottom". I have now reinstalled the lifters with adjusting screws backed all the way down, but I can't seem to get the camshaft to go past the first lifter. Do I have to pull all the valves again or what's the secret?

Yabut- then there's not enough room between the valve springs and the block to get them back in from the valve chamber galley.

what about "flipping" the engine "upside down" & let the lifters slide up??? in their bores!!! Then slide the cam in??? Just a thought, not familar with that engine but some "do" have mushroom lifters that go in from the bottom!!!!

That's the method I've been trying but as soon as you try to insert the cam the rear bearing lobe collides with the first lifter. I'm going to try again tomorrow but at this point I don't see any way around popping out all the valve springs and dropping the lifters in from above.

You have to put in lifter and cam before valve.

Fitz.

Fitz is correct. I had to take out the valves and do it in the correct order.
