Carl the hole- or bushing that is worn is just under the set screw and angeled slot just forward of the gear selector arm.

is there a bearing/bushing in there that can be replaced?

Lots of them wear out. I need lower steering shaft bearings for both a '66 and '67 Pontiac columns I have. I may tear apart a non tilt column to see if I can make fit even though they list 2 different ones for tilt and non tilt!

 GM Group # 6.521.

Right, there are two metal blocks that fit on pins coming out of the shaft (the shaft from the firewall). The blocks fit in the wide slots stamped into the cup. If those blocks are missing or worn, you get lots of play. As far as I know, this coupler is not reproduced, so if your's is trashed, you will have to get a junkyard piece. They do reproduce the rubber seal, though. In any event, it is worth taking apart and giving it some fresh grease. These are one of those parts that never seem to get any service, and the grease petrifies after a few decades.

CARL:  In the '63 Pont shop manual supplement, in Section 2 "Steering", page 2. I just found an exploded view of this assembly.

It shows the short "upper steering shaft" going into a BEARING which is in the bottom of the mast jacket.

If I get this bearing out, my buddy owns a bearing business here in Oshawa and I will have him match one up..guess GM shoulda put a grease fitting on that bearing.

Now I gotta pull the steering column..ANY SECRETS in doing that??

Ron, un-bolt the col. at lwr. "rag"joint at strg. box, then undo the the plate that holds it to fire wall[usually from the inside] drop you g/shift lingage [if col/ shift] remove lwr. trim from col., wiring, & un-bolt from bottom of dash. You may want to remove the wheel b-4 you start, as it's harder to get of with the col. not bolted to anything. Either get a puller or the way I do it is to loosen of the nut [but leave in on flush with top of column, put you knees under wheel & push up while hitting the nut with a big "brass" punch & large hammer!!! It's always worked for me!!!!!
