nomenclature

is there any numbers in the VIN that would tell what the differential ratio is?? this would be much easier than pulling the diff out to see

First, welcome here!

No, sorry there isn't. What year and vehicle are you dealing with?

I just put a 350 in my 55 pontiac I have 355 gears but my driveshaft won't fit into the 350 tranny sploines are different I guess they changed u-joint size in 56. So I'm looking for a new diff to get a lower gear ratio and a larger u-joint so I don't have to get a custom driveshaft made up thought it would be nice to know the numbers before I tore it out

If you don't want to change ratio there should be a yoke available to fit your driveshaft and the TH350 AND a ujoint to fit all that!

Is the problem with your front yoke that it's coarse spline? I ran into that on a 63 Acadian with a powerglide. It has a coarse spline output shaft on it. A simple yoke swap solved the problem.

I have a yoke to fit the tranny but the u-joint that is on my driveshaft is too small for the yoke according to lordco there is no u-joint to cross over the small to the large Also I have a chev driveshaft with the right yoke but the u-joint won't fit the diff. hence changing the diff may solve my problems

So the shaft you are wanting to use is the original 55 Pontiac shaft?

And this a Canadian Pontiac we are talking here?

Slowly rotate one tire exactly one revolution with your hand while watching the pinion yoke on the axle.
Count the number of times the pinion yoke makes a revolution.
The amount of times the pinion yoke turns represents your gear ratio.

There are special U/joints that have 2 diff. end caps available. had to use them on 52 with Tremec 5spd to stock 86 ?? Monty d/shaft. Think I used a GM/Ford combo to fit the tremec frt. yoke but should be something available for rear pinion set up too?????

I looked for a combo joint Pete but no luck. His parts guy is right from what I see. Nothing.

A lot cheaper to change shafts than gears though.

Still trying to figure out what T-Bucket is doing here??? Asks how to tell what ratio is in car,but then says he's got 3:55's or are they the replacement gears & he doesn't know whats in there??? Way back when, I had a 55 chevy & swapped out a few "pots" for diff ratio's but never had a u/joint problem, just trying to keep a rear end together, went to Olds rear end & that solved the "exploding" gears. Is it possible that the "new" pot has a diff pinion yoke on it for another application & thats why the u/joint won't fit??? The combo U/joint I got from NAPA wasn't even listed in their book, Miles, picked it off the shelf, but couldn't find it "listed" anywhere other than the pricing[Dam]

thanks carl and others for the input
we solved the problem today and carl you were right it was as simple as a yoke swap.
Ii was trying to fit a yoke from a S-10 onto the end of my 55 shaft and they have different u-joints
once we got the right chevy car yoke everything fell into place

the reason I was interested in gear ratios is because I wanted taller gears
because I went from a six cly to a v-8. usually the 6cly gears are around 4 to 1 and those aren't what I wanted for cruising
I had several cars to choose from and pulling each one apart to see what the ratio was seamed like a lot of work

any way like I said all problems are solved for now motor tranny and difff all mounted

thanks
