Which rad should I install

I'm changing my original rad in my 61 pontiac, old rad not doing the job. It is a cross flow rad, should I put a cross flow back in or put a down flow in, would there be a difference? It is a V8 with automatic trans, thanks

Is old rad not doing the job, becasue you have increased horsepower? or you drive it hard?

or is it just old and wore out?

I think doing this might have overwhelmed the stock six rad...

Here's a few choices from US Radiatior. I like the stock look of their top tanks. Standard core probably would be fine, but you have more core options with this company than most.

I'm surprised it's got a cross flow in there now, as it would have been born with a downflow.   From what I understand, the crossflow's are superior, so I'd say if you've got room, and if it's been set up for that before, stick with a crossflow.

However, maybe the problem is that some sacrifices were made when the crossflow was installed, and it's too small, or isn't getting the proper air flow, or it's too far in front of the fan.

I had my stock rad rebuilt with double core, car ran at 180 all summer .It would creep up to 200 waiting to get into car shows. For this year i installed an electric fan for backup. I can't tell by picture if you have a shroud, I do. The cross flow is supposed to be more efficent.

Rad shroud would work wonders here ,  the fan is not pulling any air across the rad in all likely hood.

does it heat in traffic or slow moving, but seem OK at 40 mph?

Its a original stock rad for a 6 cylinder, possibly seen its better days, as the 6 didn't have the shroud I installed a new one with the fan blades an inch into shroud. As far as going down the road 180 degrees which is fine but once into traffic or going through a drive-thru temp climbs past 210 or more if I let it. thanks

Mine was a 6 cyl. rad and according to my shop manual the same rad was used on the 283s. 348s had larger rads. Temp creeps up when stopped in traffic but backup electric fan kicks in and cools down.
