 Ok, this is a good topic. What makes a car rare ? By my way of thinking Olds must have made 250,000 of these Olds 88s in various models in 1971 so I would think that with 8,397 for North America thats a low production figure. Extract  numbers on a 455 2 bbl for good measure take a survival rate out 41 years at say 10% and I'm thinking this is not a common beast at all.

This car rides smooth and looks great.  I put $4,000 into it last winter upgrading to a 4-barrel carb and rumbling dual exhaust.  You can steal it right now for $3,750 just because I need the money (originally listed at $6,950).
 
The body is in great shape, but it will need a paint job due to some paint flaking on the trunk.  Otherwise, there's no dents or damage.  The white leather interior is in perfect condition with no rips or stains.  Everything about the interior is in great shape.
 
This car turns a lot of heads, and would be a perfect classic with some fresh paint and a couple finishing touches.

The father of a buddy of mine is trying to sell his 69 Buick Wildcat hardtop.  Same general idea, but he thinks it's worth $20K.   With that big 430 engine, it too is down in gas mileage.   While these big luxury cars are nice, there's really no market.

TO ME, REGARDING AUTOMOBILES, KINDA RARE WOULD BE 2500 OR LESS. RARE TO ME IS 100 OR LESS. THAT WOULD BE BASED ON ORIGINAL PRODUCTION NUMBERS. OF COURSE A CAR THAT WAS 1 OF 250,000 BUILT WOULD BE CONSIDERED RARE IF IT WAS THE ONLY ONE LEFT. JUST HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT RARE DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN DESIREABLE OR VALUABLE.

Yes I agree it is subjective. My idea of rare doesn't align with yours and that would be the case likely for the next ten people we talk to. I agree with you on Rare does not always mean desirable or valuable.

How many other cars have you seen like it, that haven't been messed up?
Nowadays it's not not how many were "made" but how many have survived and not been "Donkerized".
