Best recommendation for oil in 60 261

As stated... I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what grade of oil to use on my motor.  It is a 1960 261 with 81 000 original on speedometer.  I am only guessing that this is a true claim of condition of car and of story that it has sat for years.

I am going to try my luck and run this motor without touching it as it runs so smooth and doesnt leak a drop of oil. (single barrel carb rebuilt)

Does the same hold true from other post about zinc for a 6 vs 8.

I am really wondering the best oil to keep it happy.

Thanks for any suggestions.

J

Jay i am with Barry on this one for sure. Use a quality deisel oil of heavy weight. You are not running this car in the winter any way because if you did the heavier weight would be a problem. For good weather usage a heavy weight deisel oil is the only way to go. I have been doing this very same thing on my 1957 Pontiac 261 six for over 10 years now. The oil is more expensive than the run off the mill regular 10w30 but it pays back in long term life especially if you plan on driving it a lot like i always do. I usually wait until i find it on sale, then i buy two or three jugs. I never pay the usual high price of it. These old engines had loose tolerences anyway, so they can use the help with this better grade oil. The key is never run it on very cold days in the winter. The 261 is a wonderful engine and it is good to see that you are being good to it. Jay you can go to a much heavier grade than 10w30. I use 20w50 deisel grade oil in my 261 and my motor loves it. The key again is to never run it in winter like temps. Good luck brother. Cheers. George.

 Yep, and not synthetic oil.

I will only be driving this in the summer. Thanks for such good advice. I will look for sales. Good advice.
I can now add this to my shopping list.

All I use in my 1955   261 is no.30 diesel oil. I do the same as longstroke and watch the sales at CTC or wallyworld. I am thinking of switching to 20w50 as the miltigrade might be a good idea up here in northern ontario.
