65 Canso SD gauge cluster dilema

But it's a nice dilema...

65 Canso's never had a factory tach but the SD cars all had factory gauges except tach.

65 Nova's had a factory tach, and SS cars all had factory gauges with the tach being optional.

I have a tach (thanks to a member here) that appears to be correct for a 65 Nova.  Below I have pictures of the difference in the clusters between different years of Nova as well as what the 65 Acadian cluster looks like.

65 Canso SD cluster like my car has now:

I believe this is a 65 Nova SS cluster, minus a clock or tach in the middle. Don't mind the bezel, I think they are repro or can be refinished:

Some other year of Nova, or maybe 65 non SS, not sure:

Nova cluster wth the tach in it:

Now the dilema. You can see how unique the Canso SD cluster is. The whole thing looks different, the face markings, the bezel around each pod, the size of the clock hole, the lens, everything. However, the Nova unit fits the same opening in the dash if you remove the cluster as shown.

Do I put in a Nova cluster to get a factory type in dash tach? If so, I give up the "Canadian" part of the dash.

I can put the Canso speedo assembly and Canso right pod with gauges into the Nova assembly so the markings are Canso at least, but the general appearance of it would be Nova and I'm not sure I want to do that.

Here's a much nicer picture of a 65 Nova SS factory tach. This picture and car belong to one of the guys over on Steves Nova Site.

I also have a bezel like this one to pick from, with gray/silver accents instead of black.

do you really need the tach in the dash? i know you have optionites. i would never put the nova gauges in. can you cannibalize a acadian one and cut the center hole bigger foir the nova tach? me myself i'm using a tach clamped to the column to keep the acadian gauges.

Are you going to cover very much of the tach if you leave the opening stock ?
I'll take the clock if it works !!
do you have a spare Bezel to work with, I think i have one kicking around..
Also the oil, voltage , gas cluster looks the same as my 63 !!

Yes, I considered that but too much of the tach face would be covered. I debated cutting the hole bigger to view the tach but even cutting right over to the edge of the circle around each pod won't be enough by the look of it.

I've never tested it but sorry, my clock in my car doesn't work so if this one does, it will have to go  in there!

Yes, I do, thanks for the offer. I think I even have 2 extra Canso bezels.

I saw a few 63 SD's with those gauges and called them bogus before it finally hit me that the 63 must use the same gauge markings as the Nova and for 65 they changed to unique Canso markings. My theory anyway...

You two echo my fear exactly. But it would be so cool to have a factory looking in dash tach.

Or just a working Acadian clock? They are unique to Acadian, if so.

Absolutely. That right hand pod that houses your 3 idiot lights comes out with a few tiny bolts. In pops an SS gauge pod. Seeing your's is also a 63, I see the speedo is the same as the Nova SS cluster in my picture.

Oil gauge is mechanical. Temp gauge is electric. That ammeter is a bit of a scary thing, unfused live 12 volt wire running in and out of the cab apparently.

The SS gauge pod is reproduced, easy to find at Nova suppliers or on ebay. I think it might be Shiftworks.

The solution in my 63 SD was a smaller tach that actually fits perfect in the clock hole.  Under WOT it is a real test of my eyes so I normally only look at it on the highway at cruisin speed.

A good friend of mine down here in Florida is a Nova guy and re-plates plastic, primarily guage cluster bezels.  I think he gets about $100.  I had an extra one last summer but can't remember if I sold it or not.  I won't be home until May so sorry I won't know until then.

It seems to me I even saw a repro out there but I'm not certain on that. Yes, rechrome would certainly be a good option too.

basicly the + from the batt then to horn relay then to dash,
2 wires to the gauge . This wiring was not in the harness
but added separately

Ha, no cutting this console like I did to my 65 SD I had in high school. I still can't believe I did that. On the kickup at the front of the console I drilled a 2" hole and installed a rinky dink little tach. Yes, I did........nonono
