I bought a 1956 Pontiac Laurentian last summer and due to electrical shorts and missing wires, I'll have to replace all the wiring under the dash.
The problem I have is I've taken a look at the existing wiring and the fuel gauge has its two wires torn off. When looking at the back of the gauge, the lefthand terminal had a small red tag attached to it, and thanks to the previous owner's overzealous use of black spraypaint, he has somehow managed to cover all of the words on it. The right terminal has no markings and there is nothing else on the back of the gauge saying what is what.
I'm assuming that the left (with the red tag) terminal is the hot and the right terminal goes to the fuel sender. I dont want to mess this up as I understand that these are very important not to get in the wrong order. Anyone know which is which?
I'm sure someone will jump in and answer your question.

I really haven't taken many pics of it yet, but once it warms up a bit more I can take it out of the shop and get some good ones. Here's the only one not taken in a dark shop : )
Oh and thanks for the wiring diagram! I had one from a different site but it was pretty distorted and hard to read.
I did a bit more reading around and it seems as though power goes into the terminal closest to empty and the terminal closest to full goes to the sender. It has something to do with electrical resistance or something. Electrical sure isnt my strong point
I like the car ... looks like it's all there (besides the wiring)!
