Headlight switch wiring challenge, and a question

I decided to check over a bunch of the electrical on my car tonight after I stopped grinding welds.  Replaced some dash light bulbs, etc. Realized I had no park lights but the signals worked.  Try as I might, no park lights. Hot wiring the harness on the back of the lights made them work.

I racked my brain, test light on the headlight switch etc, no luck. Went to the assembly manual wiring diagrams, got my wire colours, traced the circuit. When I went back to the switch and checked the purple wire for power, nothing...

Removed the connector from the switch, looked at the switch, all looked good.  Or, wait a sec............

Purple wire in the connector goes in to nothing on the switch, and the connector has one blank hole in it with a terminal sticking up but no wire going to it. Someone has installed the wrong light switch I think. Same 8 port connector, 7 of them being used, 7 pins on the switch.  The unused pin on the switch lights up for both park and headlights position which is fine by me as I always thought those park lights should be on with the headlights anyway, they look so purdy!

Anyone have an idea why I can't do that?

In the pic of the connector, the purple is already moved to the top right port to plug in to the terminal on the switch that was not being used.  Originally, the purple wire was in the lower left port that is now blank in the picture. That port has no pin on the switch so there was not much point in having the purple wire in there!
