Wish I could help but my 66 is locked up at my brothers. I would say though (if the 66 is the same as the 67), I don't remember having any issues installing or removing mine. They seemed pretty straight forward. (I know that they weren't connected to the removable seat back.) Anything in the books (ie Body by Fisher)?...
I believe my '66 also has a vinyl covered panel that is above the metal shown on Lefty's '63.

I only have one that was screwed at the top rear to the back of the seat. It used a large fender washer. I'm not sure if it was factory but the car was pretty untouched inside. I have also seen them screwed to the floor pans at the rear lower of that arm rest. That made more sense to me. Paul.
