alive at last

finally last week my new starter commutator end arrived so i got a few spare hours to rebuild the starter and install the new end.Now the motor turns over nicely. So got to thinking and finally realized that the dist actually spins counter clockwise.I was thinking modern engine cw rotation. So after a quick re arrange of the wires i dumped some fuel in the carb and after about 10 turns she fired up and ran 20 secs or so.Hooray what agood feeling. Now i am still having some fuel issues as i am getting no fuel to the carb.I know there's fuel in the tank,i blew some air back through the fuel line and i can hear bubbling in the tank so i know the line is clear.Took the fuel pump off again, tightened a few loose fittings and re-installed the pump trying to make sure i got the lever under the eccentic.I think it may have been above before and thus no pumping.I did notice the small soft fuel line that runs from the  hard line to the pump is cracked at the fitting so got to find a new one or make up a steel line.Other than that on a short break and then back out to tinker some more, wish me luck.Amazingly the car is actually quite quiet just with the downpipe and no muffler.

ok found the problem i think.Had my son turn the motor over with the lines disconnected at the fuel pump and i do have suction at one side and air pushing out the other. So took the soft fuel line that runs from the hardline at the rad support to the fuel pump, put it in a pail of water and blew through it plugging oone end with my finger.Sure enough it has two holes, one in the middle and one near the end fitting. So now the search is on for a replacement.Anyone know where one can be located or a part number so i can search online for one.I guess if it comes to it i can make one from steel if i can find the right end fittings. Also can someone post some pics of the carb linkage and linkage on the d.s of the motor.Trying to figure out where/how the springs attach and see if i'm missing any pieces.I'll check through my manual as well maybe theres a pic.

sorry guys car is a 54 pontiac pathfinder special deluxe with the stock 239.I may have found a line it seems a bunch of 49 chevy stuff works on our 54 239's.Since the 49 uses the same 239.I am waiting on ameasurement from the seller but it looks the same in his pic.The starter end was for a 54 chevy and i had to drill two new holes for the bolts. My old one had 4 holes, new one had two and of course my syarter used the other two holes it didn't have.Easy fix about 5 minutes with the drill and it works perfect.

Thanks for the pic that helps a bit. There is a spring that runs from by the starter to the mid point of this linkage, anybody got a pic.I have 2 springs and not sure where they go.So today i installed the new fuel line, got fuel to the carb now and after a bit of running the car will start on it's own without priming the carb with fuel. The air in the system seems to have worked itself out.On to the next problem, when i start it it goes to high rpm(2000rpm) right away.I played with the linkage that goes across the top of the motor to the carb and got it down so it now runs at idle.Problem is as soon as i touch the gas the rpm's shoot up to 2000 and stay there.I suspect one of these springs runs from the carb linkage down by the exhaust maybe and helps pull the throttle back when the pedal is released.Really need a pic from the p.s of the carb to see if there is a spring attached or a linkage. If i pull back on the linkage by hand the rpm's drop back down so thats why i suspect there must be something to help it return to idle. The good thing is a ran the car for about a half hour and it seems really smooth and quiet.Even with no muffler it's not very loud.I have good oil pressure, the temp stayed around half way.I tried the trans with the car up on stands and i seem to have all the gears.Reverse lights work, signal lights work just maybe a bad ground in the p.s rear as it is kind of dim.Wipers work, radio works, clock works. No dash lights or cigarette lighter but maybe just a fuse i will locate the fuse box and check tomorrow.I even managed to locate the licence plate bracket and light i needed on ebay.Things left to do exhaust/muffler,carpet kit and re-install seats and one door panel.A bunch of little clamps to tighten, vent tube for the engine to install, trans fill tube to tighten down.Polish the hubcaps and install the hood and hood springs.Getting really close.

ok so looks like i have the spring by the starter in the right place. Is there another spring that runs from the carb linkage at the back to down by the exhaust manifold somewhere?I know there is a hole on the linkage if you look at it from the firewall side.I will try to take some pics and post them so everyone has a better idea of what i'm seeing

ok here's a few pics of what i have,I have a temp spring hooked on the carb linkage and it seems to help. Not sure if i can just adjust the linkage that goes across the engine.I noticed if i move it too much the car doesn't want to start.Any ideas, the throttle still seems to stick when revved and idle down well.I lubed all the linkages to see if that helps.

ok got an hour or so to tinker tonite.Tightened up some linkages, adjusted a few and now it is running much better even without the extra spring. Now to set the timing, idle, fuel mixture, etc. Also ran the car through the gears again but low on tranny fluid and of course out of everything in the garage.A quick trip to wallyworld tomorrow to top up on oil, trans fluid, antifreeze.Getting closer.

There is no spring on the carb side for the throttle linkage.
