brake faillure

If what you say is correct, sounds like a master cylinder to me... Don't bother with a kit. Get yourself a reman!

who  can  tell me  what my trouble  is  on  my  65  chev  (  l ets say  it s a  65 Laurentien   ok   )

so  when  i brake  sometimes my pedal  goes right down  to the floor

if   i pumpit  i will get back my presure  , this  happens  sometimes

and my  pedal does sink  if i hold it  down  firmly

how about  a master cyl  rebuid  kit   , would that  do  it

note  in 65  these cars had single  line  system , wich  my  car  stil has

thanks   !

Put fresh brake fluid in and completely bleed the system after you get the master sorted out.

hello all i got the master out of the car and took it apart , there isnt much to take a part !!

i took out the retaining clip , then the piston and spring and the rubber bumper at the end of the cylinder

my question is ????? is there any other special attention the give besides cleaning it all up and reassembling the master ?

then a bleed the master and the 4 wheel cylinders
thank you all

hone the bore with a wheel cylinder hone. clean it out very well, check for rust pitting.

thanks a lot for the info , i will pick one up tomorow

i checked the inside of the cylinder and it looks nice , but with some light surface rust though , but no pitted rust

there is one thing that is strange , i have GM orig chassis shop manual and i found an exploded view of the master cyl. i wish i could scan that page , but my scan is not in operation yet on this printer/ computer.

this picture shows a seal that would go right before the piston retaining clip ( after there is the piston assembly etc ) actually this seal is not in the cylinder everything past the retaining clip is in the cylinder , this seal would be between the outer cylinder ( cyl extention ) by the mounting flange to be fixed to the fire wall)

anyways, the shop manual shows that seal but my master cyl i dismanteled does not have it , either does my kit ( N O S ) i ordered

i figure there where some with and some without this seal in that production year ??????

You know, a replacement cylinder is a heck of alot easier than what you are doing! (I appreciate you rebuilding it yourself)

Like Roger said, 1/2 hour and you are applying the brakes at the first stop sign! To go through all the trouble to disassemble, clean, hone and reassemble, correctly I may add, your down time is not cost effictive!

But, if you have time to burn, I guess you have a good start!

Just replacing it would have been a much more time less lost alternative!

Just my now defunct 2 pennies!!!! (lol)

2 my wife and kids will not let me in the house because of my bad smell from
my parts cleaner tub it is soaking in
3 finally i just wanted to experience this once , but it is so faster and simpler
to get rebuilt unit for 25.00 more !
4 my time is limited these days , im am in a busy period of the year ,
( landscaping )

anyways...........live and learn !  , (   i have tons of work  to do on the Beaumont !)

Please, no offense or criticism intended! Like I stated, I appreciate you rebuilding it yourself.. That's how we learn. and you should still do it!

Just more time effective if you have no time to do it! Hey, listen, I use to rebuild my wheel cylinders up to 10 years ago.

But there seems to be more supply lately and to go through all the hassle for a $9 rear wheel cylinder on a '70 Catalina was just not worth it!

My Mom would always give me heck... Rebuilding a carb on the kitchen table was a good idea at the time..... Till she came home!!!!! (lol)

i have to add one thing after all these words , i thought i would rebuild it also with the idea of not putting it in the trash , these days we are putting everyyhing to waste and we dont fix things lke we use to.

but after re thinking this over , the hell with my idea , my old one would of have been rebuild.................by the same kind of patient guy like me in a shop , but with all the facilitys

like i said live and learn

got to go see if i can get a hone !

How I usually do it is to buy a reman .. and the rebuild kit. Put in the reman and get the car back on the road toute suite ... then rebuild the original at my leisure. Then you've got a spare on the shelf waiting for the next time you need it.

well lucky me , i called a couple of places , and asked a couple of buddys , and no results

so i drop by my local service station tonight , and i ask the owner if he has a hone and could do it to my master cyl

he tells me whe dont use those anymore , we replace everything now , and no longer rebuild anytyhing on place

he tells me i dont think i still have those hones , but checks in his drawers , oh i have one  and  it fits right in there , and you can have it

sir you just made my day , sometimes we are surronded by good people...as simple as that !

also got my steering box out to have the pitman shaft fixed , the shop i wil take it to chromes the shaft to makes it fit back in place , first time i hear about that , it has an up and down play on the shaft.

not gonna learn unless you do it. first time i did my 55 she got honed, the acadian and 2+2 got new. felt good when i had to hammer it in a panic stop, towing a trailer i might add and everything held.
